WHO on earth bets on the Tote Jackpot in Ireland?

Could it be that the placepot was for the first 6 races and the jackpot was for races 3 4 5 and 6? It is about 10 years since I was racing in Ireland and it used to be that.

tote ire is dire. dunno how it keeps going. might explain some of the over-rounds as theres no competition from the billy

Tote Ireland Jackpot is races 3-6 only; I guess they are after the same market as Quadpot players in the UK (Placepot punters who went out in the first two legs) with a more enticing return?

I *think* Tote Ireland also/sometimes offer a "Pick Six" pool, which more directly analgous to the UK Jackpot?  It has been a while since I was betting in Ireland.

I DID wonder for a time if the Pools were on different races - But  - I, mistakenly, assumed that the Jackpot was still 6 races - whatever they were.

You are correct onlooker.

The Tote in Ireland is absolute rubbish and place bet returns of 1.02 are a regular occurrence. They have been guaranteeing to match SP for a few years now and that probably keeps them on life support. I suspect the placepot depends mainly on UK punters.

Its had its day and is a complete anachronism supported by loyal septuagenarians and those racegoers who know no better. It should be humanely put to sleep. To watch the "machine" in operation at any racecourse tells you all one needs to know about an, effectively, semi-state company.

We are very fortunate that racing and breeding is supported in Ireland with a circa €70m annual grant from Government who recognise the employment created and the vast sums injected by owners of all hues. The odd leftie complains about "subsidies to the rich" but they speak from a platform of utter ignorance.

Unfortunately, getting rid of Tote Ireland won't improve anything with bookmakers bleeding the game dry and if they decide at some stage not to get involved in sponsorship we'll be in dire straits. Two of my suggestions to improve the industry's finances would be to significantly increase tax on betting and tax corporations by a multiple of its present tax rate to fund the Exchequer, the industry and gambling care.
