Soft/Heavy tomorrow for the flat races but Saturday going is described as good (g/s) in places.

GOING GOOD, Good to soft in places on Hurdle course (GoingStick: Chase 5.6, Hurdle 5.0) (Watering) (Cloudy)

If the readings are really 5.6 and 5.0 why the FACKING HELL is the idiot watering?

What a great card the mixed racing used to be on a Saturday. Shame they messed around with it.

Unless you had a day out planned there for Today who really cares ?

5 meetings on Today seems more than enough imo.

But just the one flat meeting. Sad

Good morning George

After Shergar had won at sandown he went to Chester to run in the vase which was the first time I saw him ,he demolished the field ,to this day he is still the only horse I’ve witnessed been applauded down to the start in the derby.

What price was after Classic Trial. Seem to recall either 8s or 10s? Which seems crazy??
Report iamajambo April 28, 2023 9:31 AM BST
He was 8/1 on Monday morning and 5/1 by Monday evening.

Was kicking myself for not taking the 8s.

Richard baerlien lead on
Report lead on April 28, 2023 10:04 AM BST
named his new house after Shergar, didn't he jimnast....trying to think of the most similar present day racing journalist/tipster...maybe Rory Delargy or Chris Cook...but not quite
Report sparrow April 28, 2023 10:32 AM BST
Baerlein was a class act and no doubt about it.
Report jimnast April 28, 2023 10:41 AM BST
Lead on I would doubt any current day racing journalists could get close to baerlein regarding his house been named after Shergar I do recall that been the case,

I think when we talk about the really great horses Shergar seems to get a little forgotten.
Report lead on April 28, 2023 10:53 AM BST
I thought going for the St Leger and getting beaten must have affected the view of him as a really great horse...
Report jimnast April 28, 2023 11:11 AM BST
Yes that’s true lead on shame really as we want the best horses in the st leger then when a good one runs and gets beat he in our minds downgraded, funny that year I actually backed glint of gold (trip)who beat Shergar but couldn’t manage to beat cut above.
Report jimnast April 28, 2023 11:15 AM BST
I should think the sport could do with journalists like Richard baerlein right now with all this card only stuff on racecourses and these restrictions brought in by bookmakers and now the government,I suppose I should be grateful for be around at the best time for punting.

Great memories, jimnast. Which middle distance 3YO colt impressed you the most in all your years on course?
Report A_T April 28, 2023 2:09 PM BST
looks like we're picking up where we left off last season - clerks terrified of having firm in the going description - piling on the water then it rains and the course becomes unracable

Nice question George thankfully I’ve see many great horses no surprises in the answer

In terms of form regarding derby winners then troy is by some way the best the race worked out incredibly well, obviously Shergar was a brilliant winner, arc winners alleged and peintre celebre were both very good as was the hugely underrated sinndar who I’m convinced would have reached the very top of people’s opinions if he raced at 4 ,two fillies I thought achieved much were the brilliant ouija board and snow fairy who many won’t know actually overlooks the parade ring at leopardstown, the hardest horse to be sure about was harbinger who’s performance in the king George was the most incredible performance I have ever seen obviously excluding 2 off frankels performances, but as I say no surprises in the answer it lies between the obvious two ,dancing brave who was magnificent in beating a very strong arc field also very good in the guineas, eclipse and king George but for what ever reason he didn’t win the derby, sea the stars won the lot every month from may till September he was very good then saved the best till last in Paris in October from a very tricky position he ended up a brilliant winner,I first saw him at Newmarket guineas day and whilst no paddock judge this fellow just looked the part and all things taken into account I would go for him as the best middle distance horse I’ve seen.
Report GEORGE.B April 28, 2023 6:12 PM BST
Yes jimnast, think I would have chosen Sea The Stars, my favourite part of his season being Ballydoyle throwing everything they had at him to get him beat and failing, including messing about with the pace in the Derby, which was probably more detrimental to their own chances than it was to STS's, particularly given who finished second to him at Epsom.

And any suggestion that Rip Van Winkle had been unlucky was dismissed in the Eclipse, albeit he ran a great race to push a champion all the way, with his stablemates having done a great job in setting a furious pace for him to come off.

I went to see STS at York, Mick Kinane later said words to the effect that he hadn't been impressed with the reception that the colt got after winning the Juddmonte, at least when compared to the on he got at Leopardstown. Mind, not sure what he was expecting for a Tuesday afternoon!
Report jimnast April 28, 2023 6:41 PM BST
He was trained by an exceptionally good trainer George and funny you mention the Aidan obrien throwing everything at him just noticed on my list two John oxx trained and none from Aidan obrien ,mind you ime sure he will not lose any sleep over my opinions.
Report onlooker April 28, 2023 7:32 PM BST
Yes -Sea The Stars - was absolutely superb

He also had the assistance of probably the most reliable Jockey of recent times, too - Mick Kinane
