The White Paper shows that the philosopher Edmund Burke was correct when he said of people: the less control they have within, the more will have to imposed from without. In other words we are all going to lose a bit of liberty because of people who wrecked their lives with FOBTs and slots etc.
Whenever I have a moan about a losing horse I am told it is 'pocket talk' yet no one ever says that to idiots who go insane after thinking they can make a living out of fruit machines. Why is this?

not sure you interpret berk correctly. he could be saying the opposite given the potential duality of interpretation
is 'will' a demand or a prediction? all that is required for the triumph of evil is that good punters do nothing dont believe anyone thinks they can make a living from fruit machines. they might think they have a chance of a jackpot payout. cant think of an other reason to use them |

How is it the state's job to save people from themselves? Obviously boneheads who pour their money into FOBTs could do with some limits from bookies how much they bet, but for my part I am fed up with some apparatchik (not a word used to being seen in a betting forum!) telling me how of MY money I may deposit into BF or Purple or any other betting site. |Citing Gambling Commission rules!

Mitolo: Burke DEFNITELY meant that when people can't control themselves they lose liberty as it has to be imposed. Think of the free society we once lived in and now EVERYWHERE is on CCTV because decent law abiding behaviour can no longer be relied on.

Socialists will always call for the state meddling in people's lives.
While conservatives will argue that it's no the job of the state to interfere, except in exceptional cases. It all depends on your point of view. And at the moment there are far more socialists in positions of power than true conservatives. The growth of government is all the proof we need for confirmation of that. So suck it up, it’s no good arguing with socialist. The decide first, then only see the facts that suit their guess. |

It's the lowest common denominator. Essentially the people who think they are clever feel like most other people are stupid. So stupid in fact that they need protecting from themselves. It was, of course, the ideology that unpinned the state's reaction to covid, and basically ruining the country, and many peoples' lives.
