Just arrived home a few hours ago and was reflecting on my meeting with a guy yesterday at Bath Races, I had noticed him at Cheltenham one of the days but payed no notice of him. Yesterday in Bath we were the first two in line for entry and I said hello to him as he fumbled for his bank card he eventually produced it and told me if I asked nicely the guy behind the counter might give me a free race card I buy the R.P. when racing so seldom bother with the cards , anyway I made my way to the paddock and after awhile he stood beside me and we got talking . He should me a picture of his Sea The Stars mare who had just foaled, and a picture of a resent foaled. The reason I ask is he is a fascinating for several reasons he's very small and I'd say well into his 80s with a huge beard and long grey hair and maybe of Jewish origin . He told me he goes racing 3 to 4 times a week a real character .

Joking apart Workrider I saw a guy who matched this description at Doncaster races last month - the reason I particularly remember it is was because it was St Patrick’s day and they were doing a bit of a themed day - Irish Dacers etc and I actually said to a mate it looks like a leprechaun has come to the party.

He was holding a carrier bag

If it's the bloke I'm thinking of he's called D.Warf although
people call him 'Doc'.Normally goes racing with his 6 brothers.

Jimnast - the bloke I saw at Donny was small and thin
Report dambuster April 23, 2023 11:47 AM BST
Sounds like the bloke i use to see at Newmarket,
Binoculars with loads of badges around him and thinks he' Phil Bull
Report jimnast April 23, 2023 11:52 AM BST
Thanks hoof

I saw him Wednesday about 3 hours before racing ,around where they unload the horses I got the feeling he shouldn’t have been there I actually had a laugh with him about having to limbo dance under the rail,it the first time I’ve seen him and I go racing a lot however my wife did say she’s seen him a few times recently.

Dambuster Laugh

That’s what I called this fellow although I saw no badges or binoculars.
Report workrider April 23, 2023 12:04 PM BST
Yes Jimnast, a real Fagin type character tiny even smaller than me...LaughLaugh.. He loved his racing and had a few mares he was breeding from, so very much more involved than most...Saxon was it onlooker Laugh. He'll hound you for that remark....
Report dambuster April 23, 2023 12:06 PM BST
Jimnast, the guy i use to see was small slim in his early 80s,white beard, Smoking  a Lardie.
Very smartly dresses, certainly copying Phil Bull.
Report jimnast April 23, 2023 12:07 PM BST
It would be very unusual for me not to have seen this character many times over the years workrider, people often pop up on the racecourse with interesting tales then quickly disappear.
Report jimnast April 23, 2023 12:09 PM BST
I think this must be a different fellow Dambuster I didn’t think he was particularly smart although the age and Phil bull bit makes it a possibility.

Workrider

What did you think of bath ?
Report dambuster April 23, 2023 12:19 PM BST
Workrider, were you a jockey ?
Report workrider April 23, 2023 12:24 PM BST
My third  time there but maybe the worst one of them all, I visited the Abbey and several other Churches of different denominations and ate in the Cornish pastry shop, loved the Cornish trad, then headed up to the race course armed with word for 2 horses, I was asked to look at a certain horse and note how it ran I had a word with the jockey after and got a honest response , the other horse I had word for blew out dramatically and was very disappointing so maybe that added to my poor view of the day. The rain didn't help either plus everything had to be paid by card. Brought a small pair of bins with me but really didn't need them as its easy to see most of the races without them..Train back to Cheltenham failed to arrive so miss my other connection as well and didn't get back to my hotel until after 11pm and was due to get the 7am train on Sat morning . Overall enjoyed my week though was very disappointed Newton Abbot was cancelled as I really wanted to go back there..

LaughJust wondered what was your favourite/Luckiest racecourse you rode at ?

Report jimnast April 23, 2023 1:00 PM BST
You wouldn’t catch me at bath again it’s by a million mile the worst racecourse in the uk in fact it’s the Clonmel of the uk.
Report workrider April 23, 2023 1:24 PM BST
Jimnast I agree, food outlets were poor, and little to recommend it apart from the bus ride up from the City which I must admit I found impressive to say the least...
Report jimnast April 23, 2023 1:40 PM BST
Oh yes that is interesting and bath is a fine city .

Jimnast - just to get back on track I think you and I are referring to the same guy- I definitely wouldn’t say he was dressed smart - I’d go as far as to say the opposite not that I’m exactly the best to comment on sartorial elegance!
Report workrider April 23, 2023 2:37 PM BST
Hoof yes that would be my take on him, ragged would be a term nearer the mark...
Report jimnast April 23, 2023 2:49 PM BST
Yes hoof /workrider sounds the same person I wonder where he popped up from he certainly had a sense of humour
Report impossible123 April 23, 2023 3:30 PM BST
The nearest I got to a horse was helping a friend tacking-up her horse and carriage. I was holding onto her mane and whispering good girl. I did not know what else to say.

You said the right thing impossible , Bill Smith would have took exception I think though...Laugh
