Dan Skelton has given Western Balboa lots of time following her short head defeat of Red Risk in the Lanzarote hurdle at Kempton. It was a dour test on testing ground with only four finishers from twenty runners! It was stamina that won the day for Western Balboa who will relish going out in trip to this extended three miles. A hike of 5lbs for her Kempton win is fine and Harry Skelton takes over from Bridget Andrews. Western Balboa finished runner up to Stage Star in the Grade 1 Challow hurdle last season so has always been well regarded.

IRISH POINT (best price 7/1) presumably bypassed Cheltenham with a view to come here relatively fresh and with Gordon’s Elliott’s inmate arguably holding some of the best singular bits of form to his name, there’s a decent chance that prudent policy can by vindicated.
A creditable runner-up to subsequent Supreme winner, Marine Nationale, in the Grade 1 Royal Bond at Fairyhouse earlier in the season, he went on to fill out the same position when chasing home Ballymore second Champ Kiely in the Lawlor’s Of Naas at the same level next time out. Outpaced and never a factor when dropped back in trip behind Facile Vega at the DRF, the five-year-old made no mistake in much calmer waters at Naas last time and with today’s step back up in trip seen as a positive, another solid run should be forthcoming from this consistent sort.

Midnight River is much better than he showed when well beaten in the Byrne Plate at the Cheltenham Festival. We backed him earlier this season when he finished third in a premier handicap chase at the Cheltenham November meeting and then winning a premier handicap there last December. He needed all of the 2m4.5f trip but is crying out for three miles and gets his chance over that trip today.
