Home by the Lee - Favourite - has had a great season and looks a genuine stayer who always gives its running. Bad Mistake crippled it in the Stayers hurdle at Cheltenham, yet was still in their pitching at the finish to go down by just under 4L. Has improved no end this season and will be suited by this track.
Marie's Rock - Well Beaten in the Mares by Honeysuckle, but never really showed up in that race this season and was readily beaten. Type to bounce back as she shocked us all when winning the Mares at the 2022 festival. Has a turn of foot, so if in with a shout turning in, she could sprint away with it, but this is a tough assignment for the mare after the festival run. Surely better then that run
Flooring Porter - Ran his heart out at Cheltenham. Not getting any younger and that might be a strange thing to say as only 8yo, but has had a long career at the top table of the staying division and home by the Lee has readily outpaced him twice this season, so expect the same. Was beaten by Sire Du Berlais in this last season, in which he tried to nick it from the front and reeled in, sure to go hard in front again to try and run the finish out of them all
Sire Du Berleis - Seems to be a horse to spring surprises. Won this last season @ 16-1 after a rare poor festival run at Cheltenham. Won this years stayer @ 33-1 from Dashel Drasher. in between those two big wins reads 455P4 and will very much be hoping that its a gruelling test of stamina with Flooring Porter going hard in front. Surely this 11yo cant complete the springtime double!!
Champ - Which horse turns up? Didnt run at Cheltenham this year and was a remote 3rd in this last season. Easily Beaten by Paisley Park at Kempton after holding on at Newbury the time before. Left Handed galloping track clearly suits him and maybe this year will be different for him without Cheltenham before this as he had a hard run in the stayers hurdle 2022.
Dashel Drasher - Strong staying type who ran the race of his life to finish 2nd in this year's Stayers. Consistent as anything and worse performance of the season, was when 2nd to Maries Rock over 20F, which would've been sharp enough for him. Won at Aintree in the autumn, but that was hard work in a race which was reduced by the early departing favourite. Class got him home that day. I'd be surprised if he won this, but you can never discount him totally as is his racing nature.
Meet And Greet - the unknown quantity in the race or the fly in the ointment. 3rd in grade 1 to Home on the Lee in December and that day had flooring porter, Sire Du Berlais and Bob Olinger behind him at 50-1. Didnt run at Cheltenham so comes here fresh. Had Sire Du Berlais behind him when finishing 2nd to Blazing Khal in Feb, in which he was a shorter price then a horse who was many people favourite for the stayers hurdle. Still low mileage on the clock and could be the improver in the field. I wouldn't be discounting as making up the number based on that Christmas form.
Brewinupastorm - Shouldn't be good enough to win this, despite the impression this track and race should suit. Departed early when contesting a race at this track in the Autumn and was readily beaten at cheltenham by Maries Rock and Goshan at Ascot before winning the national spirit hurdle which seems his race for the season. Has a mistake in him and yet to see him as a 160 RPR rated horse that is needed to win this race.
Monmiral - Recovery mission for this one. Once thought to be top notch, Paul Nichols 6yo has been tried over fences this season to no avail. 2nd in the Aintree hurdle 12 months ago, that looks a sub-standard Aintree hurdle given how everything has performed out of that race. This seems to be his festival, but that is more just trying to make a case for him, then actually there being reason to be optimistic on the book
Proschema - Winner at the charlie Hall meeting earlier in the season and whilst impressive, that could well be down more to early season form making it better then it actually was. Since then hasn't been anything other then outclassed at this level and will be looking for the assessor to start reducing his mark by being well beaten in these top table races.
VERDICT - Home by the Lee has had a solid season and could well be the one to be with in this race, with a lot in favour. However it was a gruelling race in the stayers and Sire Du Berleis, Flooring porter and Home by the Lee may just have their edge of them in this contest. Champ comes here having missed the festival with this in mind and should be considered at a fairly big price. However I believe younger legs may well have their day and MEET AND GREET (14/1) is appealing for this back up in trip. Marie's Rock just cant be had after the Mares run in what should take more winning.
