==================================================================

Bravemansgame was ruled out of Thursday's Aintree Bowl Chase on Wednesday evening following an intervention by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) prohibiting him from taking part.

The Paul Nicholls-trained runner was due to compete under the sole ownership of Bryan Drew after John Dance was removed as joint-owner on Tuesday after his company, WealthTek LLP, was placed in special administration by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

The BHA released a statement on Wednesday evening which read: "In light of new information, including a court order, provided to the BHA on Wednesday 12 April by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) Bravemansgame is no longer able to take part in the race and has been withdrawn.

"The BHA will continue to liaise with the FCA and other affected parties."

The King George winner was a short-priced favourite to take on A Plus Tard and Shishkin in his first start since chasing home Galopin Des Champs in the Gold Cup last month.

In a fresh statement on its website, the FCA said: "The FCA has taken various steps to protect consumers following serious regulatory and operational issues coming to light. The FCA is in close contact with the Joint Special Administrators and further information will be made available by them in due course."
Report impossible123 April 12, 2023 7:05 PM BST
The FCA was correct. The horse belongs 50% to Vertems thus must be used to offset losses incurred by the entity former head honcho; the horse could be rendered valueless if something untoward was to happen during the race. A shame for horseracing.

Can anyone remember something similar happened in the 70/80's? Old money is best and kosher; cowboys come and go.
Report mrcombustible April 12, 2023 7:06 PM BST
I wonder who advised Nicholls/Drew on the change of ownership. The BHA obviously approved it, maybe they advised it?

Real shame
Report impossible123 April 12, 2023 7:13 PM BST
No doubt the BHA would have been consulted. But, the FCA ain't stupid. Remember what happened to the shock winner of the Triumph Hurdle trained by Elliot who then ran and got badly injured in the next race when its owner (an alleged drug dealer) was subject to a confiscation order by Customs and Excise? The horse lost almost all its value post injury.

Has John Dance made any comments? Usually you can't keep him quiet.
Report GEORGE.B April 12, 2023 7:17 PM BST
So, let me get this straight..24 hours after the BHA pulled a gambled on horse out of a race at Exeter over some apparent "integrity" issue over who actually owns the horse, the FCA have had to step in and stop a high profile horse from running after the BHA had approved an ownership change and OK'd a horse to run, who had been in the part-ownership of someone who is being investigated for financial irregularities?

Report 1830 April 12, 2023 8:18 PM BST
Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up Bravemansgame has been withdrawn from the Aintree Bowl on the first day of the Grand National meeting.

It follows an intervention by the Financial Conduct Authority. Last week it ordered a firm founded by the racehorse's former joint owner John Dance to cease operations.

Bravemansgame, trained by Paul Nicholls, was due to compete under the sole ownership of Bryan Drew after Dance was removed as joint owner on Tuesday.

Dance founded Vertem Asset Management, one of three trading names for WealthTek LLP.

Last week the FCA said a 48-year-old man, who has not been named, was arrested by Northumbria Police after "serious regulatory and operational issues" came to light at WealthTek.

The British Horseracing Authority released a statement on Wednesday evening which read: "In light of new information, including a court order, provided to the BHA by the Financial Conduct Authority, Bravemansgame is no longer able to take part in the race and has been withdrawn.

"The BHA will continue to liaise with the FCA and other affected parties."

Five runners will now go to post for the race at 15:00 BST, including three who contested last month's Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Hard to know who is at fault here. How were they able to transfer the horse into Drew's sole name. Once BDO were appointed as administrators of Vertem/Dance etc they became the legal owner of a percentage of the horse. It sounds like they were not consulted and the BHA approved some illegal change of ownership?  I guess the true story will never be known as Nicholas/Drew are in a state of omerta

More wideboy stuff from John Dunce ! Accounts from Company House say he has £2m of debts and £50k assets ?? The guy has alledgedly been  using millions of investors funds to buy  racehorses ( at silly prices), stables, yachts , in the hope the stock market keeps rebounding. Basically, high risk gambling , same as Terry Ramsden in 80's . Some people's pensions and life savings are going to be lost because our financial system is flawed , allowing clowns like Dunce-Dance to get an investment licence. The horse is going to the Betfair Chase this saturday as long as the ground is not heavy - it's at the moment but weather forecast is good. Daryl Jacob will ride as Hobden is going to Ascot to ride Pic D'Orhy.

Is that astute given the King George at X'mas is his main target?

Nicholls said: "Harry's going to Ascot and he's got six good rides there. We've always had Pic D'Orhy in mind for Ascot, and Johnny's got 15 or 16 very nice horses in training with us and he needs looking after. Harry is very important to Pic D'Orhy, probably more so than the other way round with Bravemansgame.

"Sometimes when you have big meetings on a Saturday you have to make decisions that are right for everyone. I spoke to Bryan [Drew, owner of Bravemansgame] in depth and Harry, and he's got six good rides at Ascot including Pic D'Orhy in that big race so it was an easy decision. We'll let someone else have a ride of Bravemansgame so if in the future Harry's not able to ride him then we have someone used to riding him and there's a first reserve, as it were."

I think Cobden will be seething i know where he would rather be.

He said: "When you have a horse like Bravemansgame you don't want to see anyone riding one of the best of 'your' horses. It's a tough one for any rider to see the best horse in the yard ridden by someone else, but Paul and the owners have got a plan and that's what they want to do, so they have my full support.

"I'm disappointed I can't be in two places at once but I've got plenty of nice rides at Ascot that I'm looking forward to. None of those horses are a Bravemansgame, but they have some really good chances. Johnny de la Hey is the biggest owner in the yard and I wouldn't want to let him down either.

"Paul's won more Grade 1s than most people and he knows exactly what he's doing. Bryan is an understanding owner and a top man, and everyone wants what's best for the horse."

Nicholls revealed in his Betfair blog that Jacob would ride Bravemansgame should ground conditions mean he is given the go-ahead to run in the Betfair Chase, with the jockey schooling the eight-year-old on Monday morning in preparation for the race.

The Betfair is only 3 weeks from the Charlie Hall, and the anticipated going at Haydock could be soft (again). I think the owner is going for the prize money which is considerable. And, this will go some way towards his purchase price.

How much did Bravemansgame go for? The winner of the Betfair takes home £112k.
Report strontium November 22, 2023 9:26 AM GMT
Would be a no-bet race for me. No way of knowing how fit BMG will be. Given the number of times his target was said to be the King George, probably not 100%. But will have to have come on quite a bit from Wetherby to beat a tip-top Protektorat.

Meanwhile, will be interesting to see how Gallopin des Champs does at Punchestown, especially if Fastorslow reopposes. The 2023 Gold Cup form will be much clearer come Sunday night.
