Trainer left 'shocked and flabbergasted' after heavily backed runner is prevented from competing at Exeter

Trainer Sean Curran was left "flabbergasted" after his heavily backed runner Aces Full was prevented from running two minutes before he was due to take part in the novice handicap chase.

The stewards ordered the horse to be withdrawn following a request from the BHA’s integrity department to interview connections.

Aces Full had been off the track since being pulled up last October but attracted strong support during the morning, being cut from 14-1 to 9-4.

Curran said: “I am shocked and flabbergasted at what has happened and I don’t know why it’s been done. As far as I know I have not broken any rules. The horse is owned by my cousin Joe English but has been leased to me.

“He runs under my other name John Curran and I pay all the entry fees and jockey fees. It’s strange that there was no problem when he ran under my name last time and it makes me think the BHA has just taken action this time because the bookmakers have been concerned about the gamble.

“I have put a lot of work into this horse and all that time and money has been wasted now. I thought he would win today, although I was a little concerned by the horrible weather at Exeter.

“Joe would have backed the horse I'm sure, but he’s retired so I don’t believe he would have had a lot of money on. We are not a big stable and we need winners like this to make ends meet.”

At the request of the integrity department the stewards had asked the trainer to provide information regarding the selection of the race for the gelding, their expectations and the riding instructions.

Mark Scully, a spokesman for the BHA, said: “We are unable to provide any further details on this matter at the present time.”

Not just a runner per se then but a winner about to happen.

Interesting turn of events - could this become a regular occurrence one wonders.

Bookies don't like a gamble so they tell the BHA to bar the horse on the day
Dangerous precedent

Pulled up last time out after being beaten 242 aggregate lengths in four races over the water.

Trainer reported the gelding had made a "respiratory noise"

There'll be a few of the connections choking this evening.Mischief

BHA in the pocket of the bookies. How sad is that! Bookies do not take bets, BHA did (still do) nothing. No wonder the game is going down the plughole with the bookies and BHA leading the way.

Wake-up owners! Pastures new elsewhere, but here.

it makes me think the BHA has just taken action this time because the bookmakers have been concerned about the gamble.

This sounds about right imo, and a disturbing development.

Punters still have a choice:

1. Jump on the bandwagon and join in the gamble
2. Sit the race out
3. Get a bigger price for their own fancy as everything else drifts.

It is the BHA's "integrity" that should be called into question, taking the side of bookmakers over that of those laying one out for a gamble.

Where does this sh*t end?

Joe Bloggs stands to win a fortune on a 'Lucky', the bookie ring their pals at the BHA, can you find a reason to have horse X withdrawn please?

The punter doesn't have a choice if he's backed another horse in the race before the money comes for the Sean Curran horse. That punter would have been completely stitched up once John Curran has announced that Sean Curran will be training the winner of this race.

.

If the punter is on at B.O.G, then they'll get the bigger price, obviously.

If not, have a bit more on.

There ya go, screaming, sorted that one out for you.

Piss off.

What's your point anyway?

You're trying to tell me in all your years punting you never took advantage of a situation where you could see a horse had been laid out for a gamble and got on before the price shortened?

Or did you think, I can't take the bigger price, what about all those poor sods who have no idea this is likely to be punted and are taking shorter prices than they need to about their own fancies?

In all my years' punting I have never backed anything with the background of this one, because, like everyone except John Curran, I wouldn't have a clue that Sean Curran was going to take the handbrake off today.

Look at it the other way round: those behind the punt get their stakes refunded, so you could equally argue that there's no harm done to them. What's their complaint?

Anyway. Right now we don't actually know the reason for the withdrawal. Sean Curran's comment that there's nothing wrong with him running his horses as J M Curran because it's obviously S Curran paying the bills gives a hint as to what the real issue is. The gamble just brought it to the surface.

Sean should just say "I identify as a John when paying the bills" and claim discrimination.
What if they find no integrity issue, does he get recompense?

Sets a very dangerous precedent. How we going to "plunge"  horses pulled out every  every time now?

How much the books are getting hit should be of no concern of the BHA.

Might help the punters more if they flagged up the non "jiggers" instead.

Same as syndicates where you don't know who the owner is?

EG Sausalito owned by Southstand Syndicate. There are 3 in this syndicate, two of them are professional gamblers.

This information is not available to the punter

Unless there is evidence of known dodgieness in who is betting this sets a terrible precedence - horse doing well at home after lay off, small trainer fancies it so tells mates to back it, - how much dosh shortened its price as it take pennies now? No previous on trainer and this needs  investigating by someone other than the BHA - can they do this to any horse? How many punters have lost out on a decent bit of dosh maybe having backed it?
This should get you lot really angry instead of the latest 'trans dog owners refusing vaccination as schools ban the colour blue' or whatever culture war you join! The Racing Post should investigate this thoroughly but obv they wont.

What's the fiddle here - it aint no Kracken Power it? Are you saying any horse backed (to the volume this was) should be stopped from running or any that shortens in price by as much - in which case how much money has that taken for the bookies to cry foul? a whole can of worms has been opened and the BHA will do everything to close it abley helped by the lack of any journos in racing.

Who is running racing?

A big stable in Ireland had 2 runners on the Flat: one was odds-on, but a drifter. The other was backed, gifted a start and won easily. No enquiry. Another one in Ireland: A Gd 1 hurdle race; a trainer had 3 runners 2 of which were vying for fav. And, just before the start one took a big walk into the wilderness; the other walked home unchallenged. Again, no enquiry.

Big stables - no action; small stable - birch wielded. The above is a dangerous precedent. What next? I believe the BHA cannot interfere just before the race starts because of ownership. Just let the horse run; if anything dodgy (not ownership related eg family), but form wise withhold prize money.

Bookies are cry-babies. They steal off slots/casino games junkies with their fobt - BHA did nothing.
