I vaguely knew that all of tomorrows meetings were flat and worth zillions but what I had not realised until I looked at the final decs was that 0-55 horses are racing for £13k first prizes at Bath and sponsored by Truespeed, a company that has been blighting my village for a few years now. First by leafleting and door knocking at all hours of the day and night. Tall tales about needing 50% of residents to sign up to get ultra fast broadband etc. to make it viable. Then roads dug up and closed while they laid cables. Then the subsidence from inadequate road repair. Then roads dug up again as those people who had installed it reported faults. The latter is still going on and a repair van turned into my drive 3 times yesterday as he could not find anywhere else to park. I am NOT a customer. They are cowboys and that is being polite!
cowboys do a tough job very well in extreme heat and rugged surroundings in north and south america
dunno why they have become a synonym for shoddiness
but you are right to be miffed. the number of times a small linking road near here has been dug up seems plain daft. its a patchwork of criss-crossing tarmac lines, uneven and ugly, as though a giant concrete-burrowing mole was at work

Agree that real cowboys are not that bad but it is a term that most people use for dodgy traders. I have watched real gauchos operate in Argentina and their riding skills are incredible.

Except they haven't ended up with "0-55". They've ended up with 52-55, 53-55, and, in one case, 54-55. What's the point of handicaps where all the horses carry the same weight?

I thought there used to be a a rule about maximum prize money for each band of horses? At this rate some owners of a 54 rated handicapper are going to earn more than a listed winner.

What's the point of handicaps where all the horses carry the same weight? -- I think they call that competitive racing. Normally everyone is moaning about uncompetative racing!!! Sorry about your village Sage. At least the money has gone to a good cause.

nobody likes uncompetitive fields. we want them to be competative
but who wants to wager on them? they are low quality on a tricky track. this isnt the solution either

Honcho, I call it rewarding mediocrity. Mitolo- spot on.
However, I do applaud Arc for trying to do something to improve Easter racing program, which is otherwise embarrassing.

Who wants to bet on them? Well clearly loads of people otherwise they wouldn't put the meeting on. The vast majority of low grade handicapping only exists for punters. As far as rewarding mediocrity, that's just nonsense. Even if you won one of these races it wouldn't pay more than 3 or 4 months training. It seems that the very poor prize money in British racing is clearly lowering expectations.

So those 3yo's shouldn't be in training??? Tbf you don't have a clue. 0-55 handicaps are no different to 0-75 handicaps. If you don't understand how racing works, you probably shouldn't post about it.

strontium 06 Apr 23 16:00 It is rewarding horses that shouldn't be racing or in training at all. How bad have things got when we're defending 0-55 handicaps as a good thing?
Do you realise the damage you would inflict on the industry with regard to throwing thousands of people out of work just because a minority of people don't want to watch it. There are many types of races that I also don't care for but I appreciate that others do. Finally if all those people wish to spend thousands of pounds a year on owning and racing these horses who are we to turn our noses up?

Its not just that sparrow (although you are right). Its also the fact that even if you don't want to bet in one of these races, its a great opportunity to spot one or two for the future in these divisions. It's basically level weights and everyone will be trying for their lives. I can't for the life of me see why anyone should have a problem with it.

The vast majority of my bets are on the AW and low grade racing and in my view it would not do if we all favoured the same class of racing. Variety is what is required to keep all interested especially when you consider the owners and what can be afforded.

Where should they be? On a Frenchman's dinner plate?
Nobody sets out to breed or own a 55-rated thoroughbred. It's simply too expensive for one thing. But that's what most of them turn out to be, and we owe it to those animals to provide them with opportunities for a life as good as the 110-rated ones.
Anyway, I agree with sparrow. Big fields of slow horses are where you can spot some value that the rest of the world hasn't bothered looking for. I've booked my train ticket for Bath tomorrow, and then for Newton Abbot on Saturday.
Bath and Newton Abbot in the sunshine, eh? Summer's here!

Yes that's a good AW card well worth watching. It sort of balances the Bath card without any conflict. It should be said that without the low grade type of racing on offer at Bath the Newcastle card would never happen.

Ben Curtis is two from two riding for Rod Millman (20% win s at the track). In the 2.15 he rides Four Adaay for him. Horse goes well fresh and dropped a few pounds to boot.
The odd bit of wheat among the chaff is there to be found, or lets hope so.

Rour Adaay was carrying a lot of excess flesh first time out. Worth keeping an eye on.
I had one bet - laid Meisterzinger at 6.4. Its pair of AW victories off 50 didn't look worth a mark of 55 on grass to me.
So, it was worth going. Better than sitting at home in the gloom anyway.
Hope all of you who avoid low-grade horse racing were equally successful.

I did risk £1 on Four Adaay as it was well drawn but it soon faded. Otherwise it was Balding only at Newcastle and Granary Queen place only at Lingfield. She is so consistent and has paid out for a place 8 times from her last 9 runs.
