Scary Ronnie for sure.   Sad

Hope it doesn't mean there was a record number of bets at £49.99 in a clumsy attempt to keep under a radar   Grin

ronnie, a wee question. Had I walked into your shop yesterday and put a ticket over the counter with a 1k bet on a 7/4 chance would it have been accepted?

The answer is no if you asked for a carpet on you would have been ok.

I’ve always liked a bet in shop. Pre Covid I’d pop in every day. Now it’s twice a week maximum.

The shops don’t even try to compete with online any more. 20’s online, 16’s in the shop. Six or seven places online, five in shop. BOG either gone or on its way out in shops. There’s very little point in bothering any more.

The fobts would always be full. I rarely see people playing them now. Even the betting terminals are shocking value yet seem the most popular thing in the shops these day.

High Street bookies need to be tempting people in, not pushing them away.

Simple solution there steve. Just tell the staff to take up to 500 on a 6/1 maximum shot....without phoning in..

Most shop punters want a tenner or less on. They want footy accas or Lucky 15s.  If anybody is trying to £500 on a horse then this place is the place to be doing it. Not in shop.

I would have thought they'd have loads of £5s and £10s on ManU because it's Man U and it would have balanced the books up.

Would it be too much to hope that the present bookmaker industry would be obliterated by zealous regulation and higher tax for that particular "trade". Racing would be the winner with better prizemoney and the amount of extra investment in racehorses would transform the industry. A golden opportunity to be grasped by all.

Anyone bemoaning a strong Tote/Pari Mutuel cannot argue against the success of all the successful "pool" racing jurisdictions around the world. For those believing that they would or could not bet into a pool system just remember just remember 99% of punters lose regardless of the many geniuses present here who never lose.

"Piss poor prices though"

Does that not depend on the bookie?  I *thought* (might be years out of date) that some brought the terminals in from a third-party (with piss-poor prices) and just took a rake for passing them the business whereas others had their own terminals which bet into their own books (where I'd expect the prices not to be a turn-off as they are using them as a way of automating the counter-staff's job and so cutting costs)?

What is a betting terminal?

Is it  for cashless betting, like in the supermarkets with their automated check out?

Forgive my ignorance please, have not been in a betting shop since Methuselah's goat died.

SSBT - Self Service Betting Terminal

Imagine a machine that is like a bookie's website but a physical thing in a shop.

You can feed them cash or (these days, I believe) cards.

Corals had them in the 1990s when I was betting in their shop in the City - you cannot have not been in a shop since then, surely?

From experience I was having 'private' bets with people in the early nineties. Hard to believe but the one thing I and every bookmaker has in their favour is the draw. Take a Spurs v Arsenal game for example. 60,000 at the match and say 10,000 have a bet. 99% will stick their score or nifty on their team or better still for the bookmaker they will do first goal scorer and correct scores.

Some might remember The Magician on here. He made a fortune sticking 5k bets on the draw. He may have bailed out with 15 minutes to go, I'm not sure but he made enough to retire for a good while.
