... is it accepted he took the wrong course from the last? There was never any discussion of the point at the time. Looking at it again now, he clearly has his whip in his left hand , hitting the horse, and heading towards the Chair. Not too much skin in the game as I won well on the winner as well but surely one that got away?

Everybody was being very kind to him afterwards, particularly connections, and not saying he was going the wrong way. Personally, I don't think it cost him the race, as he was never more than a couple clear of Lord Atterbury, and was back level with him when corrected, and he was then beaten by 3. The real mystery for me was what was he hitting him with? He lost his whip 5 out when the horse stumbled on landing.
