Remember when you used to get the odd gamble landed with a cheap speedy early 2 y o,then it became the domain for the likes of Mick Channon and Richard Fahey,just looked at the entries,Boughey with a 100k purchase but the stand out is 3 horses (obviously probably only 1 will run) under the AMO banner with a combined sales total of 700k euros all trained by Dominic French-Davis.

Hi anorak,yes I forget the Palmer one,didn't realise French-Davis had been added to the AMO roster? in no uncertain terms either,see he has one in the maiden previously with David Loughnane,I too would have to ask you the same question as Racing TV guy.

They may have cost a lot of money but they are still early season cheapies. It looks a good renewal on paper and recently some have done well out of it but I doubt we will see a superstar.

First race used to be an apprentice handicap, if my memory serves me well. Think Doug Smith won it with his first runner as a trainer. Would appreciate knowing the name if anyone can unearth it. |

18K to winner this year as opposed to just 6K last.
Devans has two in it one of which is a Jan 5th colt that's had its nads chopped off and is both tongue tied and hooded. Pedigree doesn't suggest it's a sprinter though. Balding's hoss well bred. |

The winning Apprentice would get a lot of press the next day as he would have been leading the jockey's championship for at least one race. |

Doug Smith inherited Owen Anthony, and several other horses, from Trainer Geoffrey Brooke, when Brooke retired.

Did Geoffrey Brooke train Raffingora before it won all those races for Bill Marshall? Have a feeling Doug Smith was beaten on it when long odds on in a two horse race in the north somewhere. Then again, it might have been another horse knowing my memory. Doug Smith was my favourite jockey back then. Used to wait eagerly for the Lancashire Evening post to see how many winners he had. Happy days.  |

I don't know who trained Raffingora in his 2yo season when he won twice in six runs (probably Brooke), but Doug Smith trained him in his 3yo season when he won once in nine starts. Ended the season with a Timeform d rated 109 and sold for "only 1800gns Newmarket Autumn Sales". Following season trained by the great Bill Marshall, rated 125 and the rest is history. For what its worth, my uncle Jack said Doug Smith couldn't train ivy up a tree.

Raffingora was foaled in 1965 - so would be a 2-yr-old in 1967. Geoffrey Brooke retired at the end of the 1967 season. --------------- I believe that there was also an old codgers racing saying of ... 'Always back Doug Smith at Manchester' - and, apparently, he had an excellent strike-rate on that Castle Irwell --------------- To the contrary - Another old-timer once told me a story ... The Daily Mail used to run a Bet called - The Daily Mail 'Roll-Up' The idea was to Tip an around EVENS Winner each time - in a 20'Horse Accumulator - Starting with a £1 Stake. There was Not a Selection every day - and the Daily Mail Racing pages often proclaimed ... 'ROLL-UP' - NO Selection Today. The furthest that they ever got was about 13 or 14 Winners - and everybody was getting excited - as the Stake had grown to around £5,000 (13 Winners) or £10,000 (14 Winners) - a massive amount in the 1960s Punters were waiting with bated breath for the next Selection - and one, typically negative, Punter was said to say ... 'They've done well so far - But he hasn't chosen one ridden by Doug Smith, yet'. Sure enough - The next Selection Was ridden by Doug Smith .... and the exciting sequence came to an end.  |

The sort of race where a sole lucky pin isn't sufficient and maybe several wouldn't be.
Not a race to bet in really unless you were privy to stable information, but amongst the outsiders i thought the Grant Tuer trained filly Bellarchi could surprise around 25/1 with the books. A £30,000 yearling, speedily bred (dam won over 5f) and a mid-field draw. Trainer stats with 2-year-old newcomers a negative, but that could be said for many here. Good luck whatever you play. |

Hearts of Fire was my last bet in this race,from Pat himself biggest bet ever had on a horse,Hughes and Mulrennan were riding out there and word got out Pat was not amused.Saw the horse on the gallops most days in the lead up to the race and it was a machine.And they knew it.Happy days.2009

The form gets its first test with two of the also rans turning up in the next at Southwell. Hugh Taylor has tipped Tees Douge, who finished behind Part Time Britain, when they finished 10th and 11th.
