Was thinking of going to Sedgefield tomorrow until I looked at the fields - just how does this happen?

They weren't much better at last season's fixture:

1.40 - 3 runners
2.15 - 6
2.50 - 7
4.00 - 6
4.35 - 8

Just been reading on twitter that Sedgefield's scheduled fixture for next Thursday has been switched to Hexham (not sure why), meaning that course will host two meetings next week.

The BHA can confirm that Newcastle’s fixture on Thursday 30 March has been transferred to Hexham.

This was originally a fixture that had transferred from Sedgefield, however following a request from ARC it has been agreed that moving the fixture elsewhere would best support the management of the turf at Newcastle.

Ben Cook, ARC Head of Group Racing – Fixtures & Funding, said: “With the Jump fixtures at Newcastle proving popular this season and the unusual sequence of weather events it has endured, there has been unprecedented wear and tear to the turf track.

“Despite abandoning the fixture on 7 March, we feel it is appropriate to transfer the fixture on Thursday 30 March thus avoiding a two-day meeting and allowing greater recovery for their remaining Jump fixtures in April and May.

“We would like to thank the BHA, participants and our media partner Hexham for facilitating this transfer which retains these opportunities in the North.”

In order to tie in with Hexham’s existing fixture on Tuesday 28 March, a small number of changes have been made to the race conditions of three races on Thursday 30 March to avoid clashes. Full details can be found on the BHA Racing Admin site.

Thank you Tiger Tiger. The report doesn't clarify why the fixture was moved from Sedgefield in the first place but this would appear to be the answer:

“With the Jump fixtures at Newcastle proving popular this season...

More runners = more money.

I think the announcement for that was made late last year George, something to do with maintenance and the recovery rate of the course between meetings, four fixtures transferred, the May meeting has been transferred to Newcastle too as major works are taking place on one of the bends.

ow you mention it Tiger Tiger, there was the sad incident there in November when a couple of horses suffered fatal injuries when turning for home, and the rest of the card was abandoned.

So makes you wonder if that incident is partially the reason behind the small fields. Will be interesting to see the turnout at Hexham (x2) next week.

I'll be in attendance both days, you can never tell the size of the fields there, quite often they can be small.
