I read it in the paper on Sunday. Unfortunately recycling day is Tuesday here. The main things I remember are that he likes bread sandwiches, but refuses to eat vegetables. He still has every copy of the Racing Post every printed. He has five tellies, while his son only has four. And his father still seems to live on a little too much in his mind - he remembers how the old man only ever criticized and never praised, but that he was right to do so.
And Martin is still beating himself up over Gloria Victis - he says he should never have run the horse in the Gold Cup as a novice (completely wrongly in my view: the Sun Alliance used to be a brutal race in those days, with exhausted novices getting knocked all over the shop). What never comes over in these interviews in just how approachable he is, and how great to talk to. Even at the height of his run of championships, he'd pass the time of day with the punters at Newton Abbot. With the press, and some of his training contemporaries, not so much. But that's understandable, when he points out in the interview that it was one of those (unnamed) contemporaries who goaded Roger Cook into putting him through hell. But he has kind words for Tim Forster (who visited his yard and couldn't believe it was all as simple as cantering them up and down the same gallop) and Mark Prescott, who wrote him letters of support at the height of the Cook ordeal which he still keeps. |

I suppose the thing about keeping all the old Posts is that you never know when there might be just one thing you need to refer back to, so if you have the space, why not? When you went into his office the walls used to be lined with binders filled with the loose-leaf copies of Raceform and Chaseform, with that week's Superform on the desk ready to be threaded into its own binder. And they all looked like propunters' binders used to look in those days - grubby and dog-eared from relentless thumbing and cross-referencing.
Basically he was/is one of us. I only ever had the one horse there, but it was the best of times. |

imagine if the notfair market was around when scudamore was riding for pipe and was revving up at the start. the choc-ice on the off would been quite interesting compared to the s.p |
