Hurst Park Racecourse

good pics, some of it is still there as public space. It used to stage the Triumph hurdle. Amazing to think there used to be Sandown, Kempton and Hurst Park all within a short walk.

I always thought the same about those tracks being so close together, swifty.

I'd have loved to have been around to have seen racing there. That clip showed the Rosebery Stakes which went to Kempton. As much as the AW serves a good purpose it's a shame they did away with the flat turf track and a lot of the big races that went with it.

Yes swifty,  talking of the turf track at Kempton actually reminds me of a Saturday lunchtime banded card on that track!

I forgot they hosted those, maybe that was a sign of things to come for flat turf proper! Those banded cards served a decent purpose, were they the ones that started in the morning and were done and dusted by the time the 'better' racing started? I remember Tata Naka getting beaten in a 0-50 banded at Folkestone before landing a h/c at Yarmouth off 72, a week or so later at 100-1. Bad memories!

Yes swifty they would be finished by 2pm at the latest. I recall backing backing one at a massive price on here at one of these meetings that finished placed and the RP comments was "would not go past". I stood to win a lot of money had he won but I did have the place money. Cabin Fever was the name of the horse about 20 years ago.

I just googled your race and the card that day , I can remember a fair few of those running, I got quite attached to a lot of those 'won't go by' types!

Who was the trainer of Cabin Fever and what year was it as I think he is still training?  I got about 160/1 that bloody horse

Jimmy Fox 2014, still just about training I believe.

Oh that's a surprise as I thought it was much longer ago than that. Yes Fox was the man, I had been watching out for the horse running and he stepped it it up in trip and I don't think the horse was ever heard of again.

I remember the horse actually running at Newbury in one of it's outings at a time when only top 2 year olds ran there.

btn only 7l to Free Lift who was an 80+ horse so would surely have won races as a 3yo, very unlucky on your day.

I won a fair bit on the place but the win would have been massive for me. I hadn't seen that RP comment before "not go past" but it was bloody spot on. Was the jockey related to the trainer?

you picked one and backed it accordingly! I think Jimmy's son was the jump jockey Sean, Dominic unrelated, he made a comeback for Roger Varian but then packed it up again.

I was at Hurst Park the day Lester Piggott won the Triumph Hurdle on Prince Charlemagne. It was Hurst Park that got me into racing when I was a boy.
We crossed the Thames with dozens of others on a very large rowing boat being rowed by two strong men. After the war when racing got going the crowds there were enormous. Winston Churchill was often there to see his grey Colonist II win many times.
The Victoria Cup was a better race there than it is now at Ascot.
Very sad day when it closed.

Yes it did.

Dominic Fox is the son of the late Richard Fox, the two familes aren't related as far as I know. Richard rode a few times for me in the early 80's and the link between him and Jimmy Fox was the trainer, David Elsworth. David and Jimmy worked together on Red Candle who beat Red Rum in the Hennessy.

Golden Miller won a few races at Galleywood Chelmsford , the running rails are still there alongside the Road.

dambuster, yes she did, she cost me a big placepot that Folkestone day with a dreadful ride (4th), but it was all about getting it teed up for Yarmouth!

Yes, i was at Folkestone that day, me and a few mates backed it, couldn't believe it when she won at 100/1 at Yarmouth a few days later.
