When did 7/5 come to UK Racing?

Been around a while, I had a winner at 9/5 at Plumpton the other week.

First 7/5 winner at Cheltenham ?

They're all creeping in now 9/5 11/5 13/5 and that ridiculous 16/5.

Bit daft. Tiniest fraction away from 11/8.
On the other hand it is a more 'decimalised' price

7/5 should be now and the future , 11/8 should have been binned at the same time as half crowns , totally outdated.

First returned in March 2011 at Carlisle. About 5 or 6 in each year until 2017 (1) and 2018 (1). 19 in 2021.

Is there any advantage to using fractional odds rather than decimal anyway?

Or is it just one of those quaint traditions (though to be fair, nothing is as incomprehensible as the American odds system).

It's interesting on the betting terminals you can use either. Fractions still more popular but decimal is easier to understand and is used by all the Eastern Europeans that come in.

It's because when we see 7/5 we think, rightly or wrongly, that used to be 6/4 and half a point is lost.

Just look at football betting and the fraction prices they use, let's be honest they are only there so the bookmakers can nick some more money, as minute as it is.

Prices like 19/20 21/20 etc

I always remember backing Michael Stoute's horse Kribensis to win the Champion Hurdle and it returned at 95/40 and the bookmaker tried to settle at 85/40.

95/40 Kribensis was down to the late, great John Stubbs. Some of the SP reporters could see it being heavily backed at 9/4 on the off, despite 5/2 being freely available elsewhere in the Ring. So Stubbs split the difference with scrupulous precision.

These days the equivalent would be 23/10, which only returns you £92 for your £40 stake. Decimal odds stink.

I wondered how that price came about screaming as I'd never seen it before and I ended up in an argument with some settler who I finally convinced that 9/4 was even bigger let alone 95/40.
