I noticed there was just Karen Jewell's name next to Torbellino's in the last at Kempton, and according to a post on Facebook, John has "stood down" from the dual licence.
"We are pleased to announce that today, the British Horse Racing Authority granted Karen Jewell her sole dual-purpose license, to train racehorses at Eyehorn Farm.
Previously, she trained under the combined license with John Best, who has recently stood down, handing the reins solely to Karen Jewell.
Karen Jewell said “This is a very exciting time, and I would like to thank all our existing loyal owners as well as the owners of Eyehorn Farm for their continued support and making all this possible.
It has been a privilege working with John as joint trainer over the past year enabling me to familiarise myself with the gallops and excellent facilities on offer here at Eyehorn Farm.
I have plenty of fresh ideas and plans for the future along with some exciting young horses to look forward too. Based on my wealth of experience in the industry over the years, I am both confident and excited to now be training in my own right, I look forward to both a successful and enjoyable future ahead”."

The Top 10 John Best trained horses 1. Rising Cross (runner-up in the Oaks) 2. Kingsgate Native (won the Nunthorpe as a 2YO) 3. Flashmans Papers (100-1 winner of the Windsor Castle) 4. Square Eddie (US Grade 1 winner) 5. Mullionmileanhour 6. Sunny King 7. Hurricane Spirit 8. Sir Gerry 9. Stone Of Folca 10. Berrahri 11. Mercato - John, famous for his association with pro-gambler Dave Nevison (who also owned Rising Cross) in the early days of his training career and this one did alright for them over jumps. I think we can all agree, a thoroughly well researched top 10 with no shocking omissions! |

June 2008 Kingsgate Native , second run in the week -Golden Jubilee Stakes - 102 on the machine (apologies for AT ) will never be forgotten . Used to ride in Sutton Vallence where Linda had horses and used friends field , horses were ' moderate ' , good to see progress and wish well .

At one stage Nevinson was advising him on placing horses. Maybe 20 years ago

One of Nevison's horses with Best was King After, I think named after a nickname referencing the after-timing of winners in Nevison's RFO column.

I am a bit surprised he is stepping down as he is relatively young. Would usually see him at Lingfield, like Gary Moore , he would always watch the race on the TV in the Brasserie and would tell you about it's chances .

It all went wrong for him at Hucking for whatever reason, but then he started having winners again when he moved to a different yard.
I was an avid reader of Nevo's RFO column / diary back in the day. When it started to go the wrong way for him and he clearly wasn't punting to the levels that he had been, they moved his double-page spread to a single page further on in the paper, and gave what had been Nevo's space to Rebecca Curtis  |

I had plenty of good winners from the stables in the good years when working in the city. Put together a syndicate of interested gamblers most very wealthy and approached John Best about buying a horse. He didn't return calls and presumably wasnt interested. One of he guys approached him later and was sold a very moderately bred 2yo which JB said was a group animal. He paid c£100k and sold the horse at the end of its 3yo days for £1,200. It was placed once off a handicap mark in its 50s. This put the guy off owning racehorses for good as he believed he was misled all the way through. He did get some of the lost money back on a big stable gamble on a stable debut hurdler called Brendar which he backed massively at 33/1.
