Brilliant Tatt - I was just going to say the same. An old-fashioned gent he was in a day when jockeys took winning in their stride without "aeroplanes" or "look at how good I am" gestures as they crossed the winning line..
And whenever I hear an old clip of Graham Goode commentating I realise just how good he actually was - no pun intended. |

Anybody remember Tony Cook, the ITV commentator before Goode ? At least I think that was his name.

Big Mac for me.....met him once and he was really nice to me as I was to him. A real asset imo to horseracing and Channel 4

salmon spray...Tony Cook it was.
ITV's first horse race commentator, he died in 2002 aged 92. |

Peter O’Sullivan. His commentary when Attivo won at Cheltenham almost 50 years ago was a masterclass never to be surpassed. Lord Oaksey, too. The dross we have on air these days will never come anywhere near these icons of the turf, sadly.

BlueMax...Have to agree. O'Sullivan was sublime. His voice will always be to me the voice of horse racing.
He and cricket's Richie Beanuad are, in my view, the best two sports commentators of all time. And what was one of their biggest asset? The ability to sometimes stay silent. Of course, more applicable to cricket than racing. But, I was at Southwell last night and the course commentator was noticeably off form. Hesitant at times, then muddling his words - watch a replay of the last race and you will hear what I mean. He was caught out calling the name of the horse that looked likely to finish second and I think did not see the eventual second until the very last moment - admittedly it did finish very, very fast. Sadly, though, I have noticed a marked decline in racecourse commentary the past 6 months. Usually they are all but faultless but now I am hearing errors and hesitancy creeping in. Wonder why? |
