it's Cheltenham, which means the paper is going up 40p on Saturdays to £4.90, and up 30p the rest of the week to £4.50.Crazy

my newsagent tells me he is sent 18 papers on Saturday and sells a max of 5, and rest of the week sent 8 and only sells 1 which is me.

It makes you laugh when you hear talk of not enough money in racing when people can afford to pay that sort of price for a daily paper.

It hasn't been worth close to the asking price for years. For that price they should be producing a glossy magazine.

"£400 a year online is fabulous value.".....I agree. I need to read the form, write ups and RPR's before having a bet and it works fine on my laptop as you can enlarge the text to suit.
When I go racing though I always buy the paper, as just prefer having it in my hands to read instead of faffing about on my mobile.
What I have noticed at the races though over the last couple of years is far fewer racegoers walking around with the RP tucked under their arm.....and that could be partly to do with the price.

This is true from c 10 years ago:

Betfair asked if their brand could get fair coverage in the Racing Post(other than the one page they advertised every day) and Bruce Millington told them it would cost them £1 million a year. Betfair said no and the Racing Post basically kept on ignoring it.

You have to wonder where would Racing Post be if 10,000 betting shops weren't buying it and their wallsheets every day. I mean, no form-reader in their right mind is going to rely on the last three runs printed in the paper, especially in winter.
Report dambuster March 8, 2023 7:07 PM GMT

There will be 5,000 very soon.

This is what I don't get...how on Earth can anyone tell if they fancy something without watching it run from 3 form lines in a paper???

The technology is there to watch it yourself.

Report onlooker March 9, 2023 12:21 AM GMT
The Form tells you much More than watching Videos, though.

Watching Videos - is of NO use whatsoever - Without knowing ...

What Weights the horses were carrying
What the Going was
What level of ability the horses in the race are/were - relative to each other

- and an absolute myriad of other factors than just watching horses running against each other, as (without knowing such Facts) is merely made meaningless.

But - I agree - Just 3 lines of outings in a newspaper will not give you a full horse Profile -

That is why many of us, along with Trainers and the like, of course, Subscribed to the (twice) weekly updated Loose-Leaf Raceform Form Book binder .... well before the Internet appeared.... and Video Replays, too.

We didn't do too bad.

You need all the info you can get whether its black and white print or videos and online info but you can have all that and if you're not doing 8 hours homework a day then you will still struggle, why most punters fail and it ends up a pastime Sad
Report stewarty b March 9, 2023 1:47 AM GMT
As the RP free online service stands at present I personally find enough info that I need. I don't buy the paper anymore but if I had to pay for what I get for free at present I would go to £20 per month. That said I have no interest in subscribing but would just for the basics I get.

Each to there own but I can read the form of each horse race for free as it stands.
Report layemall March 9, 2023 4:23 PM GMT
"Layemall, out of curiosity  what do you get from the r/p for £400 that a non subscriber can't.?"....am glad you asked that question Glasgow because in addition to getting the paper for about £1.10 a day throughout the year instead of the £4.50 plus, I discovered I get more that I didn't know about!
This includes the Racing &Football Outlook, The Weekender and RP supplements such as Point to Point Weekly and a Grand National ante post special etc.
I knew that I can get previous paid for editions of the RP, and if I wanted to see the form of a horse for more than it's last 3 runs I could (but I don't), as last 3 runs plus races won, trip, ground and when, is enough for me.....each to their own though.
Thanks Glasgow :)

"Time for a new Racing paper to have a try.
Just Horseracing, no other sports. as i said earlier"

Not a chance.  At least not in print. Imagine launching that new paper, while the RP has all the advertising income and you have none, and you are trying to steal market share in a declining market that the monopoly current provider can clearly barely break even on.

"The RP should be sold in segments, £1.50 for Racing, £1.50 for Sport and £1.50 for Dogs."

That is not how the economics of the newspaper industry work.

Most of their income is advertising, not cover price.  If you chop the RP into 3 bits, each with a third of the advertising income, the bits will end up being more expensive than the whole.

Yoiu might as well imagine that your Sunday paper might be cheaper if you didn't have to pay for a "Homes and Property" colour supplement you do not read, whereas in fact the estate agents' advertising in that supplement subsidises your newspaper.
Report REDROB March 9, 2023 5:38 PM GMT
It was a much better read when the sporting life was still around, but when the competition went so did the quality of the articles in the RP.
Report longbridge March 9, 2023 6:01 PM GMT

Report mitolo March 9, 2023 6:02 PM GMT
likewise, the grauniad is massively subsidised by ads for public sector jobs that go only there and the voice(a paper aimed at black people). they are incredible numbers of them, some with risible titles and job descriptions.

nobody bats an eyelid but they sure would if eg. the civil service only advertised in the telegraph. what about diversity pluralism alternative points of view or working class opportunity they would scream.

but they only come out with this tripe when its people they dont like involved. they are the opposite of everything they purport to represent

shame for me when the rp goes, particularly as my expertise in stealing it has enhanced my shoplifting in other areas, such as vino

advertising in the rp is surprisingly inexpensive. but it is a truly rubbish paper and deserves to go. i know several who used to work there and they are less than favourably inclined toward it. mind you, they are also amazingly thick, and semi-literate
