Disqualification

One of the core recommendations proposed by the Whip Consultation Steering Group was for disqualification to be introduced for offences in which the whip has been used four times or more above the permitted level in all races

Disqualification offences will be considered by the Whip Review Committee away from raceday and therefore results of races are not affected for betting purposes.
Report duffy March 3, 2023 2:48 PM GMT
No, we'll have the surreal situation where potentially you could have a horse coming back into the winners enclosure to the usual fanfare but with connections all with long faces because they know that they will be losing the race the following week.

The ensuing interview of "winning" connections will be farcical.
Report HappyHibby March 3, 2023 3:00 PM GMT
The whip can be used a maximum of six times in a Flat race or seven times in a Jump race. Any more than this will prompt the stewards to review the ride

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

so if someone belts one 11 times at Cheltenham (4 above the permitted 7) then connections MUST know that the Whip Committee will chuck it out the following week ?

therefore if the media does it's job properly (highly unlikely i know) then the post race celebratory interview WILL be farcical imv.
Report HappyHibby March 3, 2023 3:37 PM GMT
it does beg the Q...

if one of the presenters/pundits spots a winning jockey hit one 11 times or more...

will they pop their hands up and say so ?

or will they think they have spotted one but say nowt coz they don't want to get on the wrong side of jockeys / trainers and owners...

will be interesting to say the least imv.
Report second again March 3, 2023 3:38 PM GMT
But all bets on the FPTP will be paid out, whitch if the horse is disqualified is wrong.
Report HappyHibby March 3, 2023 3:44 PM GMT
that is why i asked if the horse got kicked out ON THE DAY or not second again.
Report onlooker March 3, 2023 3:47 PM GMT
Not YET ... Wait until the Wokes get their way, though. Cry
Report geoff m March 3, 2023 3:48 PM GMT
they will probably introduce that Cheltenham Week!!!
Report TheAnorak March 3, 2023 3:48 PM GMT
And disqualification isn't limited to the winner. In theory you could have a major race at Cheltenham being awarded to the third or fourth past the post up to a week after the event.
Report HappyHibby March 3, 2023 3:53 PM GMT
absolutely TheAnorak...

one thing it will probably show up is which set of connections is more interested in punting their horse than the actual kudos of winning the race ?

whole thing could be a bit of a farce imv.
Report howard March 3, 2023 3:55 PM GMT
And then the "winning "third can run a few days later and win again without a penalty.
Report HappyHibby March 3, 2023 3:57 PM GMT
the 'Whip Committee' should be working overnight throughout Cheltenham in that case howard...

coz that will just add to the 'farcical' side of things.
Report howard March 3, 2023 4:25 PM GMT
The punters that back the horse ( at festivals ) given the race might be asking for their money later that week Devil
Report HappyHibby March 3, 2023 4:36 PM GMT
fisty cuffs with the bookies ?
Report Wesdag March 3, 2023 4:49 PM GMT
The only people who need to worry are connections.

Quite right that they don't dq immediately to inconvenience punters.
Report howard March 3, 2023 5:26 PM GMT
But what about the punters that back the promoted horses ? Sooner or later there is going to be screaming for on the day dq. Imagine if one is "given " the National.

Certainly will when they say to Luck or whoever we don't care we lumped on for way more than the prize money...oh hang on a minute we backed it with Baldy.

No different to horses that initially lose in a stewards but win on appeal.

Report howard March 3, 2023 5:58 PM GMT
The horses thrown out in a stewards was a subjective opinion though. It can be later decided it was a wrong decision on the day. Here you are just counting numbers with the whip. Easy to make decision so do it on the day Devil
Report onlooker March 3, 2023 6:24 PM GMT
Only regular Horse Racing Punters/Fans find out about those scenarios - wesdag  ...

- and I am still smarting and fuming about Mr Confusion in the 1992 John Smith's Magnet Cup - Winning, then being ridiculously Disqualified, then re-instated as the Winner the Friday following,
- Ended up having my £220 Stake at 9/1 taken from me - and there wasn't a £2000 Winnings Pay-Out desk at Portman Square.

But - If it happens in the National - Then it will be on National News - and all the 'once a year (on the 'promoted Winner') punters' will then know - and be screaming ....

'Where's my Winnings - Always said - Horse Racing is Bent'.

Be like the Result of an FA Cup FINAL being changed a week later, because of a delayed retrospective VAR decision.

It will be as big a foot-shooting exercise by the BHA - as was the Esha Ness 'false start fiasco'

So - Whip away in the National boys.

honestly, most of this is hypothetical. I'm sure they'll be no DQ's at the festival , thats whole point in starting before like this.
Report Wesdag March 3, 2023 6:31 PM GMT
Maybe the BHA should just invest in an abacus for every jockey.
Report HappyHibby March 3, 2023 6:42 PM GMT

anyone want to price that one up ?

personally i'd be amazed if NOBODY got disqualified at Cheltenham.
Report Hushwing. March 3, 2023 6:48 PM GMT
perhaps a placed horse or 2 in desperation but there'll be no winners . we've had 2 inexperienced dq's before it all sunk in . Jockeys get it now and i believe these rules are a good move
Report swiftynifty March 3, 2023 7:04 PM GMT
Paddy Mullins knows he can go to 10 and keep the race. A 14-day ban won't bother him one jot so long as he's back for Punchestown.
Report sageform March 3, 2023 7:47 PM GMT
I am surprised that no jockeys have yet appealed about the whip stroke count. It can't be easy to tell if they make contact or not or does the rule mean how many times you can wave a whip? The rules say "used" but does that mean wave or make contact and how do they make the judgement? In a close finish the business end of a whip may well be obscured from all of the cameras.
Report cloone river March 3, 2023 8:46 PM GMT
You couldnt make it up.The BHA are not fit for purpose. And are bringing racing into disrepute.
Report saxon farm March 3, 2023 9:52 PM GMT
Never thought I’d say this….
But just ban the whip now, rather than **** footing prior to the inevitable.
Report Wesdag March 3, 2023 10:38 PM GMT
^ Seems the most sensible/logical thing to do so 1.01 won't be happening anytime soon.
Report sageform March 4, 2023 9:54 AM GMT
With no whips at all there will be horses veering all over the track, particularly towards the end of races. Reins can only do so much to steer a green or wayward animal.
Report now wheres that switch!!! March 4, 2023 10:53 AM GMT
horses veer all over the course even with whips, down to the poor jocks more than any whip rules.
Report formoftheace March 4, 2023 10:54 AM GMT
True horseman & woman don’t rely on the whip….
