An interesting French import for powerful connections, but the market at present is not encouraging anybody to back her today. This is the film of her win on debut - she's in the pale colours, No 12, lining up in front at the start:

https://www.equidia.fr/courses/2022-12-06/R2/C6

As you'll see, not a great round of jumping and she'd have been any price making the final turn with three to jump. The bare form is nothing special, as she was getting 2kgs from the runner-up and 3kgs from the third, both of whom have French hurdle marks equal to 118 over here. But the potential is pretty obvious if Henderson has sorted out her jumping. And the opposition here is not obviously any better than what she beat in France.

Bluegrass was very useful on the flat, but only made 50,000 gns at the HIT sale, perhaps because he looks to lack size for hurdling. And as his dam was a two time Group1 6F winner, stamina might be an issue as well. Fourofakind was beaten by a 200/1 shot on debut and the third from that race finished about 40L behind Bluegrass at Doncaster.

It all depends on how you feel about backing a drifter in those colours!

I can understand why she is on the drift Alan despite the oposition ,have they had her long enough to school her to a decent level etc? The big difference in ground conditions and the trip are completely different to what she has faced.Even if she was burning up the gallops I would be a watcher rather than a backer given what she has done on the track.

Struggling to rate any of the opposition at 110. Maybe a small punt on Capstan

An aside concerning ownership and prizemoney Alan.A mate who has given up because of the disparity between costs and prizemoney reminded me of an old friend who owned a horse called Murphy's Gold. Donny would say if he could win one race a year about half his costs would be covered, whether or not that was the case he was happy enough with his lot,he had a few big punts when the horse won but it was a long time between drinks.

The reason I mention the horse is that he had a similar record to Love Dreams has at present albeit it a lower level, which is pertinent in terms of prizemoney. He ran 71 times winning 7 and placing 10 times for a lifetime earnings of £36,800,given inflation from the mid 1990's to today,Murphy's earnings dwarf what your horse has earned and yet the costs in terms of return must skew the figures even more?

I think it is a comparisons such as this that the industry needs to look at when addressing the prizemoney issue outside of the pattern, owners such as yourself could become extinct if nothing is done and even when energy prices stabilize the rewards will not reflect the input of owners?

Out from 4/7 tangle? If they go quick will she be able to cope with the hurdles,if they go steady will it be too short? Too many questions and Bluegrass better value imo!!

Apolgies for delayed response - problem getting it to allow me to post. I'd be a bit surprised if she ran in the Cheltenham race given how close it is, and the fact that Henderson has the favourite and JP has another unbeaten filly in it with Mullins. Perhaps more likely that this filly could go to Aintree and try her luck against the better juveniles there.

Thanks for all the comments.

Report now up on Post site:

" Under Control, who impressed on her British debut in the juvenile hurdle. Owned by JP McManus and trained by Nicky Henderson, she earned Cheltenham Festival quotes, but Aintree's Grand National meeting is on her agenda."

WD Alan and at better odds than early backers (BOG) may have envisaged.

I watched the VR last night, won very easily, hands and heels basically, although what she beat is open to question. Cheltenham and Aintree will go a long way to determine who the better juveniles are to date, but Willie has several including a couple of decent fillies, one of which i'm hoping wins the Triumph.
Report TheAnorak March 4, 2023 10:57 AM GMT
Morning Andrew,

I reckon the dates for Aintree this year - Apr 13th - 15th - will mean they won't attract the best Irish runners, as Fairyhouse is earlier the same week and Punchestown starts on April 25th. Of course, the second and third string runners from the Mullins yard will probably still be good enough. If she was mine (no chance!) I think I'd take the option at Aintree of running against the older horses in the 2M novice hurdle - nothing to lose by trying that as there isn't a fillies and mares race. Whatever happens next month, she should have a good season ahead in the mares only Listed and Group races this side of the Irish Sea.

Any thoughts about Princess Zoe in that race?
Report TheAnorak March 14, 2023 12:42 PM GMT
Not really, other than amazement that she's running over hurdles at all. Normal response to an 8-y-old in a Grade 2 novice hurdle would be 'no chance', but she's not a normal 8-y-old. I do think she'd be much happier over a longer trip, but it's not a race I plan to bet either way.

I've a feeling that Under Control is running mainly to give McManus a runner in the race, as his other entry Zenta, also an unbeaten 4yo trained by Mullins, is presumably now going to run in the Triumph.
Report DIFERENT GRAVY 12 March 14, 2023 12:54 PM GMT
Thanks Alan

I agree about the distance, but they did have the option! My daughter has a link to the stable and they think she will run a massive race IF her jumping holds up.
Report ashleigh March 16, 2023 11:20 AM GMT
backed Under Control for the mares novice today at 28/1 e/w, still in the could be anything bracket, beat nothing at Newbury but never came off the bridle, as a 4 yr old getting plenty of weight off Luccia who i am not convinced by her.

Big gamble on here 18 > 9 on Pricess Zoe in the last hour. I am on @16s  4 places, hope the jumping holds up.
