Featured a bloke running a gambling workshop. He was said to be on the minimum wage and losing thousands. The reporter, Katie Razzall, didn't have the nous to ask him how this was possible. She also said that betting companies make most of their profits from people who lose and are addicted. The whole report focused on gambling and football. Surely the biggest sources of problem gambling are online casinos, slots, etc ?

Apparently losing gamblers are victims with afflictions who don’t have to vouch for their own actions….
Until the legislation imposes on them new rules and if they attempt to bypass will then be judged to be responsible for the act.

Why not just save all the carnage and agree they should have been responsible from the beginning?

Scrabbler - obviously normal gambling ie; football/horse racing are problematic for some but as you say the worst problem at the moment is online casinos and bingo sites. The advertising is out of control and portrays a pretence of normality by it's use of actors all having a good time gambling on their phones. Online Bingo is a massive problem yet the ads suggest that there is a happy community and a non existent social side. I would ban all casino ads and many of the bookmaker ads and call to task TV companies over shows that are sponsored by casino/bingo sites.

I know people on this bet fair Forum, don't think gambling addiction is much of an issue. But I can categorically say, particularly during and after the pandemic, the surge in people addicted to online slots and casinos grew exponentially. I have data on females aged 18-26 who during the pandemic spent way beyond their means, having not previously even seen an online slot machine/casino.

Online casinos and bookmakers made hundreds of millions, without asking people if they were alright. Yes, we all know self-help books are basically just "Help" books and at the end of the day individual responsibility is ultimately up to everyone.

However: Can't Stop, Even If You Want To Stop, is true with people who can't stop gambling, especially on fast-paced games of luck. Even 5F horse races and greyhound racing would appeal.

Money Laundering  is so prevalent in online casino and sportsbooks,  most people have no idea what's happening.

I hope people don't think I sound like a broken record on here, just something I'm passionate about. With new AI and data sets I've been using lately, I've becoming even more interested in gambling/addiction/. I hope in the future to help people the best I can.

Dusty - of course people should be responsible for their own actions but unfortunately as with alcohol peopel become addicted and lose control. The real victims are the families of addicts. Are you suggesting that there is no need for legislation.

CH I’m saying the proposed increase of clumsy law empowers operators who don’t answer to the regulator.

Why not make the regulator regulate on existing laws instead of assuming
1. That they will be more effective carrying out more stringent regulation
And
2. Ignore the fact those who are forced to stop don’t get any help for the affliction and continue to find ways to satisfy it.

If there is one thing alone that makes me very angry in this whole affair, it is so many not separating out the sports betting from these random numbskull ways of gambling. As though they were all identical.

But to many, gambling is just gambling - whatever form it takes. It is true people can have great problems through sports gambling alone. But far more many are likely to have a problem due to casino gaming - where no-one ever has any chance of winning.

If only the on-line "bookmakers' had some way of identifying the potential/likely/probable "problem gamblers" - they could maybe just profile them, single them out. If only they had that data. LaughLaugh

Another extract from the BBC - I have extracted all of the drama and bias in attempt to stick to some facts and also to protect the forums' "victims of outrage".

The subject access request from Iovation showed almost 19,000 separate items of data, tracking his Sky Bet gambling. Sky Bet says it uses this for fraud prevention.

The behavioural profiling by Signal which can be used for marketing has more than 85 categories, and James found it had 166 fields of data on him, not just from Sky Bet. To take just three of the categories profiled: it categorises him as a high-value customer; it knows he chases losses; and it knows the percentage of its emails he opens.

Sky Bet said it uses "a number of third party data providers" for fraud detection, age verification and marketing.

Ravi Naik, from the law firm AWO, helped James access his files. He says we need to understand what information we give away: "Gambling companies do not operate in a silo of data - they operate in this wider ecosystem. There's data flowing in different times and in different ways.

"The concern for our clients is that their data is being used for behavioural surveillance, understanding what you are doing, who you are and what you like."

The Gambling Act 2005 became law across Great Britain in September 2007 - and now the government is reviewing it to make it fit for the digital age.

And at any time the person being ‘surveilled’ can tell them to stop, restrict their betting and go on an education course funded by the bookies.

But the onus isn’t on the individual apparently until they attempt to avoid the state imposed criteria of what everyone is and isn’t allowed to do.

At that point what?

If you look at the collection of companies who sell everything about you just for accepting cookies on a website then you will see the same levels of data collection from benign activities.

Everyone also needs to remember that these proposals arn’t even on the table, how could they be?
When each company hold selective data about what a customer does with that company….the cross party want a centralised database that would be a collection of all the info on all uses and an algorithm with a set calculation that’s cuts people off at a pre-agreed point.

How else could they possibly do it?
Skybet individually meet the criteria on their data upto the agreed point, then Joe bloggs moves over to b364 and does it all over again?

Having profiled and identified the most likely candidates for addiction i.e. people that are susceptible and are following the same pattern of on-line behaviour as a long line of degenerate addicts; The industry has had two choices.

1) Send them a "marketing" e-mail which states: Our algorithms have identified you as a probable degenerate gambling addict. Please find below 100 free spins to one of our products that has proven to be the most addictive and highest loss vehicles to people with your particular profile. It has been our pleasure to help you on the path to your new life of poverty and misery.

2) Send them an e-mail which states: Our algorithms have identified you as a probable degenerate gambling addict. It is therefore our duty to make you aware of the following information .....

Obviously the industry has proactively and voraciously gone with a weakly disguised version of Option 1.

But the industry is blameless! - It's those useless feckers at the GC (which of course is actually a massive contributory factor) - but what do you want them to do, now they have seen the error of their ways? Try to regulate a ruthless technology savvy industry in a digital age with a set of out of date analogue rules that were partially reliant on good faith from the industry?

When I asked TM a perfectly legitimate question; how would they stop an addict from opening their spam folder and taking up one of the company’s offers he started waffling about laws on the activity of people attempting to purchase contraband.

I 5hit you not, this person who

1 says he knows what will happen and that will be nothing, trust him
2. When asked if he supported the proposals that caught up innocent people and made everyone at some point supply their personal information- he said said he did

Now seems to think that all this contrivance that is proposed to help the degens not address their own ‘addiction’ would ultimately be considered a criminal for the very same addiction, because they happened to pick the wrong supplier…one that wasn’t forced by the state to operate to a new hand wringing remit (imposed by a regulator who everyone agreed failed to carry out far easier tasks)

He doesn’t know wtf he is talking about, but then he needn’t because all he cares about is weeping for the people who can’t say no….until ofc they still can’t say no and will get punished for it, after the GCHQ has had to spy on everyone to catch them at it

Quite how much all this centralised nonsense and personal data delivery of everyone is going to cost, or the pitfalls that always happen when the state attempts at anything complex is anyone guess.

From what I know, unregulated casinos/ bookies are only used by very savvy people. Your average working class person still uses regulated online websites. The Black Market isn't as much of a threat highlighted by particular publications.(coughs RP)

I don't know if people are aware, but the GC is basically now just AI and algorithms. The data they get is so sophisticated, I could write here for hours! Also, they have a predictive AI that can anticipate what may happen in each given circumstance.

In the noughties, the definition of money laundering changed from the activity of hiding the source of and rehabiliting criminal funds, to a new definition of basically doing anything at all with criminal funds. So any bets placed by criminals using the proceeds of crime are automatically money laundering. Having said that some firms make it a bit too easy to deposit through one channel and withdraw in another, but I doubt that this is utilised to any degree for traditional money laundering but is used by account hackers and would be money laundering.

23 years ago:

The threat of disciplinary action hanging over Graham Bradley, Richard Guest and Norman Mason has been lifted following the conclusion of the Jockey Club's probe into the ownership history of handicap hurdler Night Fighter.

In a newspaper report published last October, the ex-German five-year-old was alleged to have been used as a vehicle for international criminals to launder drug money when, heavily backed each-way, he finished second at Market Rasen on May 5 last year.

Yesterday, the Jockey Club drew a line under the matter when they said there was "insufficient evidence" to warrant a hearing.

The October article also claimed that, during the course of the police inquiry into race-fixing, Bradley - who brokered the deal that brought the gelding to Britain - was questioned about the cashing of pounds 10,000 worth of chips at a London casino, which he indicated represented payment for a racehorse.

That horse is understood to have been Night Fighter, but the deal subsequently fell through and the horse was sold to permit-holder Mason, who employs Guest as his assistant.

https://www.thefreelibrary.com/No+Night+Fighter+disciplinary+hearing.-a060968716

Worth noting that the SP of Night Fighter in that Market Rasen race, where it was alleged to have been backed each way as an alleged money laundering exercise, was 11/8. Which give an idea of the amount of money alleged launderers are allegedly willing to pay in such an exercise.

Interesting reading screaming about Night Fighter and the same horse was also involved in another dodgy episode.

LEADING permit holder Norman Mason and veteran jump jockey Kenny Johnson will be at Portman Square today to attend a hearing over the running and riding of Night Fighter at Perth on August 21.

The inquiry has been convened under the Jockey Club's `safety net' procedure to investigate a possible breach of rule 151, the non-triers' rule.

Night Fighter was a 14-1 shot for the CSC/Wavincoll Novices' Hurdle, in which Johnson stepped in to replace Scott Taylor after the latter sustained serious head injuries in a fall the previous day.

No official action was taken after the Dashing Blade gelding finished a never-nearer fifth of 11 finishers behind Stellissima, beaten almost 14 lengths after pulling hard, but subsequent scrutiny of the race video by the monitoring department at Portman Square has resulted in an inquiry being called.

Julia Cook, speaking on behalf of the the Jockey Club, stressed the inquiry will be dealt with no differently than if Mason and Johnson had been called before the stewards acting on the day of the race.

"Night Fighter's run has been identified as a possible case to answer under rule 151 and will provide a first chance for the Disciplinary Committee to speak to his connections," she said.

"This procedure has been used only rarely," she added. "It was last used for Len Lungo's Pollyputthekettleon at Kelso in October 1998, when the Committee decided that the horse in question had been ridden in accordance with the trainer's instructions and had been asked for sufficient effort."

rofl To be quite clear no significant amounts of money have their origin as criminal funds disguised through customers betting online or in shops. They simply fall under the technical definition of criminal funds being utilised.

Back in the day, Chinese restaurant owners would save up their excess undeclared income, pop down to the casino and buy chips. They would march about for a bit having a few bets, maybe, with a confederate, betting equal amounts on red and black and eventually cash in asking for a cheque, which they would photocopy before banking. They produced the photocopy if asked by the Revenue where the funds came from. Those days are long gone and no one believes such simple evidence of criminals beating unbeatable games for significant amounts.

Actual money launderers run online or even b&m casinos, where they can churn huge amounts of money from illegal to apparently legal profits. The tricky bit as usual being getting cash into the banking system.

Personally I don't see how this helps at all.  The money goes in and less money comes out, with a clear trail.  Pin money you'd be better off paying cash for your shopping, at a restaurant, for home improvements etc.  To do it professionally for proper money, you'd have companies fronting dummy invoices, paying cash bonuses or whole salaries to some of the workforce (who may be illegal immigrants) in an otherwise legitimate interest, and siphoning off much of the profits to some dodgy destination, of which there are many.
