I noticed yesterday that the horses they've designated as being "eyecatchers" in the form comments, do get listed on the paper's signposts section for their next two starts (under the same code and within the past year).
I've obviously not been keeping a record, so can't tell you if or not you would have made a profit following them blind.
Anyone with RI checked this out?

Correction, presumably not the form comments, but rather the "eyecatcher" for each meeting, which is why it says as noted by their analysts.

All depends on the quality/effort of the person doing the eyecatching.
For instance, at Taunton on Dec 8th, the RP Eyecatcher was Brentford Hope - 11/8 2nd fav, beaten 7 lengths fair and square by his market rival in a virtual 2 horse race (3rd in was 14/1). Always been a talking horse on the flat. How was that an eyecatcher? In the previous race, a horse that had been tailed off in its 5 previous runs over hurdles (OR = 76) travelled sweetly in a novice hcap hurdle and came there looking a likely winner and fell at the last. Did he not see it? (Everytone else did it seems - it was a beaten fav at Ffos Las yesterday, ran well, probably bumped into one). I know it's all about opinions, but... Hugh Taylor used to do eyecatchers on ATR, and would pick out a horse at a price that was a bit short of room 4 out at Wolverhampton, then come home nicely in 5th with the jockey not asking for much. Simon Mapletoft then took over and would have as his eyecatcher a Godolphin horse that bolted up by 5 lengths at 1/4 at Chelmsford. Jonathan Neesonm would be one to take notice of - he backed one EW in the Huntingdon bumper yesterday at 100/1 - finished 5th, but... To him, its Plumpton run caught his eye (7th of 11 at 50s). The RP eyecatcher that day was a 2nd of 3 finishers. I don't think they try hard enough. A bit like their 'analysis'..."can win again if he can build on this". I guess it's not easy when you have to churn them out day after day after day. But bland space-filling comments are useless, as are lazy eyecatchers. |

Perfectly correct ged, you should only really rely on your own eyes no one elses imo.

Brentford Hope was indeed an eyecatcher that day at Taunton, but only in the sense that it found absolutely nothing when asked!
Looked really fit too, and both the trainer and the owner had made the effort to turn up at Taunton. This will be a really good test for how good Derham is. It's not a question of giving this horse more ability- we know it has plenty of that already. But can he find the key to making the horse win races? |

the last thing we want is a "shrewdie" picking out these eyecatchers, leave them pick these LTO winners for godolphin, gosden and haggas etc.
it's getting more difficult anyway with the constant "close ups" and hit and miss "head on" from sky sports racing and a next to useless "racing review" with RTV catching up with them regarding pictures, although they do have a excellent racing replay. |
