Burt Bacharach dies aged 94: Composer was behind hits including I Say A Little Prayer and Raindrops

Saw him 4 or 5 years ago maybe longer, one of the best gigs I've been to. His voice had obviously gone but he was a great raconteur, played piano and had a top notch band and vocalists. My favourite of his, Anyone Who Had A Heart.

I always think that Burt Bacharach songs have a particular "feel" that I find hard to put into words but I know it when I hear it. A sort of sickly schmaltzy intonation that I dislike. "Raindrops" ruined Butch Cassidy for me. I hated that sequence on the bike. I've heard them all and with one single exception, I've never been surprised to learn that a particular song was by him after hearing it. The exception is "Baby It's You" which the Beatles covered on their first album and which I've always liked.

He wrote some stuff I don't like. "Raindrops" is definitely one as is "Magic Moments" which I suspect few will remember. But some of his 60s stuff,particularly anything Dionne Warwick recorded first,is pure pop class. I'm not a musician but the distinctiveness which has been noted is something to do with a certain jerkiness in most of his rhythms.

What the world needs now, is love sweet love.

Unfortunately, David, too many warmongers among the world's leaders.

And yes he was married to Carol Bayer Sager,they wrote some stuff together after he and Hal David split up. There are odd ones that a lot of people don't realise he wrote. I only found out he wrote "24 Hours From Tulsa" 20 years or so ago.

was listening to radio both on way and back from hospital today when listening to Drive on 5 live - was amazed to find out he actually wrote "Arthurs theme" from the film Arthur - a song i thought was all Christopher Cross's doing (still sung it magnificently mind)

Had over 70 top 40 US "HITS" and over 40 UK ones - some numbers there and greatly influenced likes of the Beatles and Noel Gallagher amongst others so he musta been doing something right

Not all of Burt Bacharach’s hits were on the charts. The Oscar-winning songwriter and pianist found success at the racetrack, too.

He first got into horse racing in 1968, the year in which he co-wrote hits “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick and “This Guy’s in Love with You” by Herb Alpert.

Bacharach asked Charlie Whittingham to pick out a horse for him. The Hall of Fame trainer selected Battle Royal, who won his first race, setting Bacharach into a decadeslong career as an owner and breeder.

Bacharach, who died Wednesday in Los Angeles of natural causes at the age of 94, named his breeding operation Blue Seas Music.

His biggest successes came in the mid-1990s with two horses whose names were tied to his musical success: Soul of the Matter and Afternoon Deelites.

Soul of the Matter won seven of 16 races and had career earnings of $2.3 million.
