Today sees the 35th running of The SIDNEY BANKS HURDLE at Huntingdon.
First run in 1976 (there have been 13 Abandonments) - the race was, and hopefully still is, considered to be a top target for Novice Hurdlers with Cheltenham pretentions.
The race has an unusual 11-year Winner's sequence to it, that I noticed when checking Past Winners.

That was shown in the first-ever running - Won by Derek Kent's New Zealand-bred GRAND CANYON ...
- who had Won the Tolworth Hurdle before the Sidney Banks, and went on the be beaten by Beacon Light at Cheltenham - and then ended up by Winning the Colonial Cup in America, twice.
11 years later - in 1987 -
The Sidney Banks Hurdle was Won by the 'infamous' (to those of us who know) ROBIN GOODFELLOW, ridden by Graham Bradley.
11 years later - in 1998 -
The Sidney Banks Hurdle was Won by FRENCH HOLLOW - who had also Won the Tolworth - and went on to Win the Sun Alliance Novice Hurdle by 14 lengths ...
- Then, he came up against Istbraq, 3 times.
11 years later - in 2009 -
The Sidney Banks was Won by TIME FOR RUPERT - who went on to become something of a Cheltenham favourite
11 years later - in 2020 -
The Sidney Banks was Won by SHISKIN

Now - I know you have all got to wait until the 2031 race Winner - before loading up for Cheltenham .........

There are other races at Cheltenham, than just the Festival.
TIME FOR RUPERT Won 3 and was second twice (including to Big Bucks in the World/Stayers Hurdle) from 10 outings at Cheltenham (50% of Appearances) What is - "rubbish" - about that? Some of us are not 'blinded' by just the over-trumpeted Festival. Anyway - Thank you for your somewhat sarcastic input. |
