Jockey Club scraps dress codes

Ffs sake anybody who enjoys York would be absolutely mortified if jockey club took over.

Then why don't they scrap  the absurb dress code in members ?

No idea but I would sooner have the dress code at York than have it run by jcr without the dress code .

Make a brown trilby and binocular case compulsory.

Please form an orderly queue all of those who know someone who hasn't gone racing because there's a dress code in place. No, I thought not.

I am on the other end of this - one of the perks of paying for the smarter enclosure is the smart surroundings, and that includes people being smartly dressed.

Perhaps they should have just updated dress codes to "smart casual". Ties optional, and clean trainers acceptable, that sort of thing.

@ramruma - "smart casual" means different thing to different people - to me it would mean a shirt with a collar, trousers not jeans and shoes not trainers.  Others would see collarless shirts "smart" jerans and trainers as acceptable.

I think a fair number of those who turn up in suits do so because that's about all they can manage. They know they are clueless when it comes to dressing down. Pink cords anyone? Tie under a jumper? Look at what some of the trainers/presenters throw together.

I may be out on a limb here.  Should be up to the racecourse (or owners of) to decide. I am a member at several courses and am happy with the relaxed rules in most. BUT then there is Goodwood, Richmond Enclosure - I particularly like their requirement to dress up. take my eldest Grandaughter in a posh frock on Tuesday, My sons in law, suited and booted on Sussex day and then both my daughters on Ladies Day. It wouldn't be the same if we didn't dress up.  Still each to his own.

dress code should be quite simple. no trainers and you must have a pair of socks.

how is it that not wearing socks has become a thing? what sort of wanchor would decide not to wear them, having almost certainly worn them for the majority of their life?

i hate getting dressed up as i look like a pikey whatever and me in a whistle is like fred astaire in a track suit.

With the fashions in the UK being so horrendous,smart casual would not work if it was the basis for a huge percentage.You only have to go to some of the "Ladies" nights to witness what some call smart,casual or fashion,tattoo's on the foreheads,neck,arms and legs instead of hats or material,the men are not much better imvho!!!

great for me cos ive gotta bag that can be quite un predictable - and tbh after watching wot clobber they turned up in last year i was already prepared to turn up wiv a loada nike gear after being raped for 20 notes in the car park - 30 if ya divnt book b4 on line  - £30 to park a car ffs its shocking stuff tbh - tell a lie i took train in from Worcester last year but driving this time - Most course totally free - Catterick 200 yd walk Hexham same Toon same -how do they get away wiv it

Standards of dress have gone right down.
Looking at the old films, people dressed better 80 years ago than they do now.
But dress is only one factor,  manners and standards of behaviour have also changed for the worse. Soon the pigs will outnumber decent folk.

It's nice to make an effort for say Glorious Goodwood and the ladies like to dress up as well and that's all good. Last year at Epsom on a RTV club day however, wasn't quite so agreeable...if you know what I mean.

Whilst I agree manners have dropped I still believe on that topic the uk are still better than anyone else in the world.

Another move from jcr is to announce the haydock park family enclosure will only be open on 3 days this summer ,even closed on Easter Saturday,therefore anyone wishing to take families racing can pay extra to go In tatts and join the coach parties on summer Saturdays,

Dr Crippin,  I had a look at old films to see if people were better dressed in those days and I found this picture of 2 dapper gentlemen getting ready for an afternoon at Brighton Races.  You can clearly see the members badge on William Hartnell's lapel.  However, these aren't the sort of people I would feel comfortable associating with in the member's enclosure!.

In which case they are the criminals in Brighton Rock and so indeed not "the sort of people I would feel comfortable associating with in the member's enclosure"?
