two articles in RP tell you all you need to know, it would make you laugh if not so blatant and worrisome (along same lines as Chancellor of Exchequer making an error in his tax returns) - this sort of S1TE just seems to have become the norm and there's very little objection/resistance
GBR - Jermain Jenas (farcical) failed to stop decline in attendances
Cheltenham - £6 for a Guiness (much lower volume of business than Festival) jumps to £7.50 for Festival and their response is simply we don't give a f...everyone knows in business that the profit margin increases with the volume of business, regardless of the extra overheads etc..if you're making £1 per pint profit at £6 then you're making £2.50 at £7.50 and if you're not then get someone in who can actually run the business
blatant rip-off and I hope others do the same as I decided after first 4 day Festival, go somewhere else where your custom is actually welcomed

Gordon...I hate to say but the Cheltenham response is dead right. It is business, supply and demand.
But the public do have the ultimate answer. DO NOT go to the big festival meetings and the prices will come down. However, the Cheltenham management know full well that for years the demand for the festival has always outstripped supply. It is the same the world over and with almost anything else, from the Superbowl in the US to a Lords Test Match. Annoying but the way of a free market economy, I'm afraid. As for Jermain Jenas, well almost every racing fan could have told them not to waste their cash on something so stupid. No matter who they picked on would have made that daft campaign work, let alone Jermain no mark!! One day, those who run racing might think of asking those who already go racing about how to increase attendances. But they would rather spend £1.5 million with some stuck-up. pon*y advertising agency. Serve them right for the failure! |

That was the Chairman of the Tory Party, not the Chancellor, unless you're referring to something other than the recent scandal? As for Cheltenham - it sells out, so your boycott has just replaced your presence at the Festival with someone less sensitive to beer prices, I would have thought? |

the knight - yes you're right but my ire was drawn by their response that the price increase for the Festival was because it's a bigger event with more overheads, which as I've said goes against all business norms, if they had been honest and said, we set the prices at a level where the public will still come and purchase AND maximise our profits (which are returned to racing - allegedly) then I'd have to applaud their honesty
longbridge - my boycott arose from my inability to physically, emotionally cope with 4 days, that this has led me to Aintree which I find far better in so many ways is a bonus and I'll certainly not be rushing back to the Festival. In several racing pubs which I frequent when out and about there's the same story - oh we went for xx years in a row and not going back, Cheltenham won't worry a toss whilst the like to be seen/influencer crowd take my place BUT horseracing as an industry should be mightily worried, that they're not shows yet again their lack of understanding - as the knight says, the last people to be asked about going racing as an experience are those who've done it week in, week out, all over the country in all sorts of weathers for all different types of racing |
