It's Suth-ul. A contraction of Southern Well.

I spoke to a couple on Saturday who were from Southwell.  Their pronunciation was "Suth-ul".

It is Suthull. The Southwell pronunciation is being inflicted by the middle-class people who have moved into new builds over the the last 30 years or so.
South well would have been correct in Anglo-Saxon times but the accent round there is basically northern so sound changes would have made it Suthull by the 11th century or thereabouts. Try saying Southwell repeatedly.

Isn't Hayley Turner from Southwell and says it is pronounced South- Well.

sparrow, I remember her being asked about this a few years back and was surprised as her family are from there. I'd heard it and learnt it as Suth-ul for as long as.

Go and try and find Happisburgh or Kilconquhar using the pronunciation as in the spelling in surrounding areas?

The pronunciation of place names is best left to local language for arguments purposes imvho! As for racing commentators ,lazy uneducated and talentless mostly,like RP correspondents who care little for basic grammar.

and Southall is actually pronounced Sow-fall

Because that's the southern equivalent.

swifty, an East Ender or any working class born Londoner would pronounce it Suvall. Of that much I can be sure.
