You are not comparing like with like Howard. CH may well be the best around but that is not necessarily a lot. None of what is around could compare with the great hurdlers of the past so it is only opinion. You may be right but equally you may be wrong. Get a couple more years and a better class of opposition and you never know but I cannot see CH running 80+ times like Sea Pigeon or even 35 times like Night Nurse so no fair comparison can be made.
Horses nowadays run half a dozen times over a long period in non handicaps and often against very limited opposition. Then suddenly they are the greatest ever. Which begs the question, the greatest at what?
Report howard December 28, 2022 4:00 PM GMT
I speak mainly as a serious punter brigust. If you are good enough /experienced enough taking an early view is what is needed and  what pays. He likely won't have to be as good as Hurricane Fly to win at Cheltenham but I "know" he's better. The good ones have a conformation and an aura everything about them. You more than anyone should know this.
Report howard December 28, 2022 4:09 PM GMT
When Sea Pigeon left Greystoke I would be very surprised if Richards didn't think he had lost a great horse.

Like everyone else I don't know who the best horses are unless they meet. I have my opinion like everyone else but I think horses should be judged on what they achieve in their careers on the racecourse. Too many horses run over a limited range of distances for fear of defeat and are unproven, let us hope CH is given the opportunity to show how good he really could be.

This is why Kauto Star is one of the best ever. Any distance any ground and any track. The excuses that Henderson comes up with for his horses are crazy!

A horse with an aura , come on Howard give me a break.

Mind you suppose Wilbur may argue the point about Mr Ed.

Can't believe a horse possesses an aura , it's the presenters / pundits / fans / followers that christen them with one.

You can only beat what's put in front of you agreed but Epatante is beginning to assemble a profile similar to Excelebration.

Overall in agreement with brigust but that said these decade vs decade comparisons don't half become tedious and end up nowhere.

Howard Usain Bolt is a great 100m runner but if he was great at 200m as well he would be a great athlete.

Deptford Grundy wasn't an all time great imo. He benefitted from Dick Hern running three pacemakers for Bustino (the fourth was withdrawn otherwise Bustino would have won).  CH is benefitting, may continue to benefit, from his age, his trainer spacing out his races, and the lack of suitable opposition.

not saying who will beat who what i am looking for is value  by the betting constitution hill the likely winner ,con hill is around  2/5 the race is 3 months away , i  would have to risk say  £500 to win £200 its not the way i play ,i can lay out say £100  on each of vauban and state man and have the possible chance of winning a grand plus if either wins . if con hill is as good as he looks so be it he may be way too good but at the prices i will take him on .its horseracing and anything can happen .

Report brigust1 December 31, 2022 5:23 PM GMT
According to you JCM there have been no all-time greats beforehand anyway so how will you know when one comes along? I think the best way to test an up-and-coming all-time great is to compare his achievements with others achievements. Then when your supposed All Time Great exceeds the achievements of others that should be the time to celebrate.
With CH there is still a very long way to go but that only makes the waiting and the achievements better and worth the waiting. To crown him a long way too early takes away the value of any successes. He certainly looks the best around at the moment but we desperately need something to test him properly. And that goes for those who currently tell us how great he is. They will desperately want clear evidence of superstardom. Otherwise they will be defending their positions forever. And the more these horses are over rated before reaching suitable achievements makes the connections refuse to test their horses properly. Henderson is classic with this and we don't want unsubstantiated claims like the ones recently and previously clouding our vision, do we?

Who's a better horse in their respective discipline, Constitution Hill or Baaeed? Or which has been hyped more, Constitutional Hill or Baaeed?
I believe if Constitutional Hill wins by at least 15 lengths or a distance (with or without Honeysuckle) it will go a long way cementing him as a genuine contender as the best hurdler ever. The thing is I do not know who the best hurdler ever was? Carrying mega weights in prestigious handicap eg Schweppes in the past was not unusual, but now unthinkable and frown upon.

Acey - Bit left-field this, but I have just realised who you remind me of - A guy who goes out on a boastful limb but always has an excuse when proved to be wrong. Not saying you are wrong in this case but....

When I was young, I played in a pub Bar Billiards team here in Sussex, we had a player who was the epitome of boastful pomposity. He even used to keep his coat/jacket on until about halfway through the 18(?) minute frame. Before cue off, or his first shot,  he would eyeball (coat on) his opponent, bend down and say "mine's a Cream Label (loser bought winner a beer!) before cueing off. He was very good, but he didn't always win, but when he lost, he somehow contrived a way not to be embarrassed by his pre-frame behaviour or comments.
