when the camera angle changed around 2/3 out you could clearly see the number on the winner, it was nearest the camera

Yup good commentator

Sure it was hulk but when you have the other one in your head as I did all the way round, you don't look at numbers. Anyway, very happy surprise. I hadn't realised that Joe had 5 there so might have to be a bit selective to avoid giving most of it back. I did get 12/1 though.

Next one is being backed so my bet at 6 looks OK.

Lucky to be second and looked a bit slow to me.

The only way it was possible to tell them apart was to be continuously tracking one of them. Numbers are distant thought when you're matching name to color. 100 came in for Queeny @ 19 when obvs beat..but only couple of quid of it was matched

I think it was Alan Potts who wrote in a book that he once saw a commentator going to redo a commentary and wished he could change his bets . Just watched this race -how do the stewards allow two horses with such similar colours to run? Putting a red cap on one of them wouldn't have hurt .

Correct Manoleeds particularly when the mud is flying, but if they were accepted as different when registered, I suppose they were passed as OK. Trouble is some silks fade over time. The winner was supposed to have grey sleeves and cap.

Manimole: 28/1, big eye-catcher when third on debut in similar event at Ffos Las 6 weeks ago, still plenty to do in seventh 2 out and finishing well (horse/rider banned by stewards and trainer fined). Hood goes on and she seems sure to improve. https://www.attheraces.com/atrplayer-popout/VOD/1313896/true?showResult=yes |

Manoleeds,
The changed commentary I wrote about involved a very close photo finish at Goodwood and the commentator had called the wrong horse as the probable winner. Because the film of the race (a 2yo group 3) would be used by TV when the horses ran again, the commentary was re-recorded to avoid confusion for future viewers. Ironically, the commentator in that case was also Simon Holt. I had backed the horse that Simon had called as the winner, hence my recall of the event. |

Would it not help if all courses did as Kempton does with coloured number cloths?
