I know it seems respectful on these solemn occasions when a key member of the royal family dies, especially our long-serving Queen BUT are there not better ways to mark this, than cancelling sporting events. Life is extra-ordinarily hard for many in the UK at present - why disrupt anyone's livelihood more?  Arm-bands, periods of silence would be more practical.
Mass cancellations of various sporting events is unhelpful - we can all mark our respect in our own individual ways without resorting to this blanket knee-jerk response. Let's see some pragmatic, common-sense leadership from the relevant authorities. We would not expect the army, police, medical professions  etc to stand down for a day .
Having said that, the Queen was an admirable and good person who leaves a great legacy. She will be remembered with great affection and gratitude, but she had a full life and LIFE goes on. Condolences to all her family and friends and mourners everywhere - let's celebrate a wonderful and rich life.

Cancelling sport events is stupid - easy enough to pay respect before each event. She wouldn't have wanted people to have their lives cancelled, and would have wanted sport to go on I'm sure.

Yep - it makes little sense and is out of synch with the Queen's charaacter. What happened to 'carry on regardless'?

allowing sporting events to continue gives the british public a chance to come together to celebrate the reign of an exceptional monarch.  there's absolutely nothing disrespectful about it.  are all the pubs shut ?

To be fair the break gives people a chance to travel miles to stare at big railings in the rain. And the dead person isn't even inside.

What bothers me is - what was the decision-making process - WHO makes these decisions? Where did the guidance come from? Yesterday's racing authorities (whoever they are) were ready to shut everything down and announce cancelling (watch how you sue the word nowadays) everything. How? More importantly - WHY? Is there at least one of those who presumably believe they are representing the public's desires, willing to stand up and explain. Weird times indeed.

We have had enough of lockdowns without the BHA imposing a voluntary one, the BHA are scared of upsetting the Virtue Signallers.

Well done to Rugby in choosing to play this weekend

The queen has done tremendous work in promoting the uk i wonder what she must have thought at the totally incompetent governments of all parties handling of the uk and its resources and the clown who is now king mourning is fine but dont make it mandatory people have a right to chose how they mourn as for 24hour coverage day and night now is way over the top

The fact that rugby decide to play games makes all the other cancellations more stupid. There's obviously nothing to stop games going on with appropriate respects paid at events.

Yep - it can be interesting hearing some of the anecdotes and tributes once, but not when they're repeated and looped for days on end - with multiples channels interviewing people who ve met the queen once - offering fatuous opinions and platitudes - filling in spaces until the next ceremony or repeat.  Respect, solemnity, grieving fine in reasonable doses but give us some healthy  or even unhealthy options to do or watch goes on. Most of us do not wish to be gloomy but to celebrate and then move on. Her legacy will deservedly be around for a long while.

Why is it ok to race on Sunday but not Saturday ? What is the logic ?

Plenty of time, and opportunity, for people to 'show their respects' on the day of the Funeral - when everything Will come to a standstill.

Today (Friday) I can accept, too - But Saturday makes no senses whatsoever - except to the out of touch with modern life 'Establishment'

- and just what is the difference between Saturday and Sunday?

Meanwhile - The Establishment would appear to have missed one ...

- With the CRICKET TEST MATCH still taking place on Saturday

There is a contradiction, if ever I saw one.

Musselburgh cancelled Saturday & Sunday race meetings  as a mark of respect following the BHA  lead / decision to pay respects to the late Queen , and yet  the BHA then goes on to rearrange the St Leger meeting for Sunday , what the hell is that all about

think the Musselburgh cancellation has something to do with scotland, but imo its a missed opportunity to allow people to come together, grieve yes but also  celebrate the woman's life watching something she loved to watch herself.  disrespectful ?  absolutely not.

It is called 'showing respect'. Something most on here seem not to understand the meaning of. Perhaps that is why leaders make decisions not followers.

If people want to show respect that's fine -but why force people to show respect?
By:

So according to the BHA it's ok to race in England and Wales because the Queen is lying in state in Scotland , will that mean all Scottish racing will be cancelled when she lies in state in Westminster abbey !

It is called 'showing respect'.

can you explain why people going to watch horseracing at Musselburgh on Sunday is disrespectful.  fully a day after people go to watch premiership rugby and test match cricket.

I also read the following part of the statement , " An additional day of racing at Doncaster will also be scheduled for Sunday 11 September, to ensure that the Cazoo St Leger and other important races lost as result of the cancellations can take place" .

Hulk as I said some on here no nothing about showing respect. I suggest Musselburgh wanted to show their mark of respect and cancelled racing on Sunday as a result. Other racecourses and other sports will show their mark of respect at different times and in different. I hope that explains it for you?

The reason Musselburgh is off on Sunday will be due to extensive road closures as the late Queen Elizabeth 11 is taken to St Giles Cathedral  in the Capital.

Her body will lie in state ,a procession by her family to St Giles from Holyrood Palace where  the "vigil of the prince's" will take place ,the public will have an op to pay respects at  St Giles, a service will be held and then Queen Elizabeth's  body will be taken to Holyrood where it will lie in state for a further day before being taken to London.
All important stuff and and very pertinent for Scotland imo.

Quite right that horse racing in Scotland  should give way on Sunday as a mark of respect to the late Queen.

some of those who go on about "showing respect" could do to model the bahvaiour by "showing respect" for those who do NOT share their opinions about this subject
