In an unrelated matter, an 81-year-old racegoer, who was denied admission because he wanted to pay with cash at the turnstiles, has been invited to be a guest at Doncaster, as the course acknowledged it should have responded to coverage of his case on social media.

executive director Rachel Harwood said

"We are a cashless venue and have been since I joined in 2020, but that tweet should have been responded to directly so we have been in touch with him and have invited him to come as a guest."

Explaining why Doncaster is cashless, Harwood said: "It is Arena Racing Company's policy, the same as the Jockey Club and many other sports venues.

"It is the way the world is going and the cost of managing cash is immense. In the last decade when we operated with cash, we'd have 20 staff here until two or three in the morning counting it. We'd then have to process it, send it to the bank and make up about 200 floats."

Well, what a bloody shame - and it's only 'the way the world is going' if people stand by and do nothing.

Having a cashless option is fine, but making it compulsory is another thing altogether.

Covid legitimized unprecedented constraints on public and civil liberty, including the legitimacy of denying people the centuries-old basic right to trade using the printed and minted currency of the realm.

Businesses are now continuing that legitimacy under the auspices of saving money for themselves. Sod the 81-year-old chap who wants to use that old-fashioned relic called cash.

Well, each and every one of us is heading inexorably towards our own 81, and unless you want the banks and government to control every digital penny you have, get off your arses and start speaking up.

Cashless society 'is the way the world is going'.

It should not be happening. We should not be allowing it to happen.

Total control coming our way.

Just don't attend cashless events, and go in cashless shops.

But the sheeple just cant see it.

Going along with what they are told to do.

With all notes and coins now needing to be gradually reissued due to the queen's death, blames on huge costs for new bank notes can ensure they now go into full express mode for a total cashless society.

Totally, Stevo. HSBC made £15 billion profit last year, each time you use a card they get richer. It has to be cash or I'm out

Don't see a problem personally. Paying for things by tapping my watch or phone are far more convenient than having cash on me.

Obviously in the case of the 81 year chap, they should have made an exception.

Every time  you use cashless , data on you is generated , stored and used .....some people do not wish this to happen.

You might find your overdraft facility being withdrawn if the bank sees money going on racing or betting.

That won't happen using cash.

Same with any application for credt. They'll view you as a bad risk if they know you bet.

from the OP's post:

Why would any business voluntarily take on that burden when 90%+ of people are happy to pay by card and spare them the expense?

All companies pay a service charge for processing debit and credit cards, which ,of course, gets passed onto the public with higher costs, which isn't always the case with cash.
Of course companies like card payments as it cuts out any "shrinkage",whether accidental or deliberate!

I'm a cash only person
Went to Hereford races a while back and admission was card only as in above story
A bloke hanging around by the turnstile beckoned me away
Instead of 18 quid admission fee, i gave him a tenner, he "lent" me a member's badge, we walked through the next door gate showing the stewards our badges. Ten yards later i gave it back to him and he walked back out again
I hung around for a while and watched as he repeated this process every 2 or 3 minutes
Nice little earner for him, the racecourse losing out for refusing cash
All food and drink outlets on the course cash only as well
Only tote(britbet) and bookies taking cash

I try to use cash all the time. Trouble is the "folding Stuff" is not what it used to be. Drew £300 quid the other day and almost impossible to fold and secure in a pocket.

One thing I have learned over the years is that if something ain't broke some clever dick will make sure it soon is.

Layingisthewayforward....what happens when you are at the till with your items and there is a technical glitch which doesnt get fixed for hours? Happened recently to a friend of mine and he was the only one in the queue paying cash so bypassed all the ones who only had their card or phone on them. Only Card will be a disaster....not just for this example but for the control it will give those in power over us.Sad

Would it not be useful for small and medium shops to out a card in window cash preferred but not essential so customers know, would not apply to big supermarkets and stores they just love cards do they not

Cash in hand is always cheaper and no bookwork.

It's the black market they want to stop.

Plumbers, electricians, builders.

It's not just about stopping people using the black market. It's about stopping rebellious types* from accessing the legitimate market too.

Do as you're told or see your card suspended.
__________
'Rebellious types' now covers £101/month gamblers, in case anyone thinks it would never affect them.

Don't you realize the nightmare you are sleepwalking into? Really.
In China now, they pay welfare to people digitally, and they restrict what that can be spent on - you don't decide what you spend your money, the government does. if you don't see where that eventually leads if there is no cash then you are indeed a very stupid person.

I usually always have cash on me but yesterday I went to buy an anniversary card for the wife and had no cash on me. Went to the till to pay but my card declined. Tried it 3 more times, declined on each occasion so I had to go and find a cashpoint (one luckily just down the road) and come back. When I got back in the shop there was a long line of customers due to other customers cards also being declined. I happily skipped to the front of the queue to pay with good old cash.Happy

A cashless society would be the end of society. We would all be nothing more than numbers in data

bases and what we can spend our money on will be determined by algorithms.

One of these days the system will go down for a long period of time and all those who pay by card

or phone will be fooked. The bus I took this morning stops at Bournemouth University, so many

students boarding. Not one paid cash, they all paid using their phones. I doubt that many of them

have a clue what the fare is. The same in the pub I frequent, where they order by phone from the

table. Ask any of them to add say 33 and 17  and they will use a calculator.

LaughLaughLaugh so true rograin

Was in the pub up at Beachy Head last July and we had to sit at a table someone gave us then had to place our order for both drinks and food .

Then had to wait a gud 30mins b4 both arrived together and that was 1st time we had even been acknowledged as even being there other than the guy at entrance who had originally seated us.

Totally soulless experience and needless to say we didnt re-order any drinks CrazyCrazyCrazy

cant get on a bus in london with cash, either   phone or  debit or credit card .... other alternative is an oyster card  and ya gotta pay £6 for it last i heard  then  you have to top it up in shops or online ......
By:

When: 05 Oct 22 17:48
The cost of an Oyster card is a deposit you can get back if/when you surrender it so no big deal.

Actually been a huge improvment over queueing behind people trying to count out their fares in change.
