I have long believed there is a nod and a wink arrangement in racing - let's call it the David v Goliath Phoenix Continuity Stakes, where Goliath is slain at prohibitive odds while  David is allowed to banish the bailiffs from applying the coup de grace! So it was today, Sula Bula, trained by JG Cosgrave (who?),  at odds of 11/2 (form dictated the price should have been nearer double carpet)!
Who says the Big Guns haven't got a heart, howevervself-serving  !

Poor effort, getting the horse's name correct would be a start, confusing it with a class horse that excelled on the flat and over jumps as an entire before then taking up stallion duties wreaks of laziness, do you work for the RP by any chance?

JG Cosgrave (who?) you ask. Well, only the man who found Honeysuckle for a start! Also associated with the early days of Grade 1 winner Battleoverdoyen and of Kim Muir winner Mount Ida. That's recent history, I'm old enough to remember him producing a horse called Fidway who won a Christmas Hurdle a long time ago. As for Sula Warrior, I guess a mare who finished second to a Willie Mullins-trained runner two starts previously had a pretty decent chance on paper in a bad maiden at Perth. Yes, the Elliott-trained favourite flopped, but he wasn't able to win an egg-and-spoon race at Cartmel either...and finally, Cosgrave has consistently traded strongly out of the point-to-point field for three decades, no bailiffs knocking at that stable door, for sure...and before I forget Sula Warrior has a good pedigree, her unraced dam is a half-sister to Promalee who was a Grade 1 winner for Frances Crowley, and from family of Gold Cup winner Little Owl

He's from County Down in Northern Ireland and is basically a point-to-point trainer and buyer and seller of young horses. He has never trained more than a handful for the track. I suppose he's an under-the-radar figure in many ways, but he's someone whose opinion about any young jumper would be respected by all of the top trainers/agents etc. He's also a very nice man incidentally. It's one of the strengths of Irish jump-racing that we have people like this operating with young horses, in the old days they sold off most of their best youngsters to Britain, for the past 20 years the trend has reversed and we keep most of the good ones at home, though often with British owners of course. In a different sort of world, Cosgrave might have trained for a living rather than concentrating on buying/selling. There are not many in the game, Britain or Ireland, with his sort of skill in identifying young talent, so that's "who?" he is!

Is your skilled kitchen fitter Ronan M P McNally also off the radar to us English mugs?

Hello jmdc, I'm going to take the bait and answer what I'm sure was a rhetorical question! so no, that stable is a completely different kettle of fish, a gambling stable that has made many headlines...Cosgrave is primarily a producer and a behind-the-scenes figure in racing terms, so I wouldn't necessarily expect the average punter to have heard of him. I was aiming to make the point that he's a very skilled operator in his particular sphere. And I think the opening poster was barking up the wrong tree in implying some sort of conspiracy in the case of the Perth race.... I would never term any punter a "mug", but some punters are more informed than others...just as some kitchen fitters are probably more skilled than others...
