Tate, a qualified vet, also questioned trainers putting red hoods on their runners to go to post in the ongoing heatwave.
The red hood is a common sight at racecourses as runners handle the preliminaries and head to the post, but Tate says he has seen numerous instances at racecourses in recent days of horses getting very warm in the headgear and then failing to run up to form.
He said: "We have a three-year-old filly, Floral Splendour, to run in the last at Haydock on Friday and she will be wearing a red hood to post, but only because the temperature is forecast to be 19C.
"I've been racing a couple of times this week when those runners wearing red hoods have overheated by the time they got to post, which is no surprise as it's like wearing a balaclava on your head in hot weather which is something we'd never do."

Surely there are no unqualified vets? Does not make any sense but they always say it. |

It relates to their pro quals rather than their primary profession. For example ratpack is a qualified accountant, but he's not an accountant.

if he's that bothered about the welfare of his horses then i'd imagine he'll be withdrawing all of his entries over the next few days rather than boxing than in a lorry and sending them racing in 40 degs of heat?
surprised the bha have not already canvassed trainers about postponing racing or moving start times as they seem so keen to appease the welfare brigade, would have thought that was a big box tick for them |

ive yet to encounter a vet who hadnt gone through the necessary training and granted permission to practice so 'qualified' is redundant. it would be better to describe those who were not qualified as such, as they are vanishingly rare.
