RP website article about Masekela and the Derby form. It includes the following sentence:
"James Doyle turned on the breaks when his chance evaporated"

Seriously?!

I don't post here often, but had to vent somewhere! Sackable offence in my book for whoever let that go public.

Oh, and don't get me started on the could of/should of/would of brigade. This is so common now - it's f*cking could've/should've/would've for f*ck sake!

Are the majority of people in the country now illiterate?

What is going on in our education system? Does anyone really care, except me?

Two observations with regard to the OP:

1) Should it not be "for f**k's sake" not "for f**k sake"?

2) And surely it's "cue the abuse", not "queue the abuse"?

Few of us are perfect and no one seems to care much these days, but I think it's important for those of us who do, not to dumb ourselves down and I find it galling when racing presenters/pundits who most of the time sound intelligent, use the term ''the last twice'', something I think may have originated with Richard Pitman.

Please spare me this abominable term..

It seems like a different language in this era and something everyone will just have to accept.

" I don't know nothing " is a term used by over 90% i'd say , so good luck trying to change that ( Manuel's fault in my view )

Mathematical deficiencies are rife , finding someone capable of subtracting two numbers these days isn't easy.

Bought at item for £1.68 last week in a local shop , the automatic till wasn't functioning so the young girl took about 40 seconds looking for a calculator to work out the change required.

It's the way of the world guys , get used to it as there are far bigger issues to worry about.

I suppose the language and word meanings change with use or misuse all the time. Started centuries ago. Goodbye was , “ God be with you ,” and “ God“s Blood ! “ Was the most offensive word on the street. It's an interesting subject if you like that sort of thing.
Constant misuse of a phrase means it become the norm rather than the exception. One amusing one I like to quote is when we talk about the ball hitting the back of the net…….it's actually the front of the net !

Brains - The evolution of words actually písses me off as we're eventually gonna come full circle in the distant future.

I once heard on QI that in pre-Shakey days (and I don't mean the 50s before that Welsh crooner) the word 'nice' meant
foolish, frivolous, senseless - near enough the opposite of what it is today.

That was a new one on me but there are many more everyday words with contradictory definitions, like buckle, scan or screen.

So many errors made in all walks of life now...and you know one of the main reasons why?

So few bother to CHECK what they have done. Stupid auto-text has inserted 'breaks' instead of 'brakes' in the OP's point and the 'journalist' did not bother to check what he had written - if that's what you can call it!

Standards are so low everywhere now and it is going to cost us dear eventually.

Too much PC, too much liberal thinking, too much 'be cool and live your best life' mentality etc etc etc. All sh*t and a return to some Victorian standards would not come amiss.

More and more the UK is becoming harder and harder to live in for a 62 year old with my slightly old-fashioned (read sensible) values!

I'm recently retired but in the latter part of my career, my role included ensuring that legal documents had been correctly drafted by less experienced managers. I can say with a certain authority that the standards of grammar, spelling and puctuation produced by graduates shocked me to the core on a daily basis. But among them were some commercially astute individuals who will go on to do well in their chosen field. It seems that the world of work has changed its priorities.

Sticking with the original topic..something that really got me irritated four or five years ago but thankfully seems to have disappeared a bit now was mini-cab companies having on their cars 'Advanced Bookings only'.

FFS, it should have been ADAVANCE and not Advanced. To do something in advance is to do it before it is needed - IE book a cab. But Advanced means of the future, or went forward. Hence, did the cab companies mean you had to book using some technology from the future?!!

I know many will say it does't matter but it does. Get the small things correct and the big things will be easier.

But, to conclude my rant, what the f*ck have teachers been doing in schools for the past twenty-five years?!!

I've just seen a copy of my Granddaughter's end of year school report. (She's six). It said that A now has to develop an understanding of correct spelling and punctuation. Encouraging perhaps, but the school has just spent the whole of her first year encouraging her to write phonetically. So teach them the wrong way to do it, then teach them how to put it right. What a waste of time.
Report steerforth July 9, 2022 1:08 AM BST
A bit unfair to cite "them's the breaks" as being poor grammar. Johnson was clearly  using a familiar colloquialism, alluding I believe, to how billard balls break to set up play in a manner that a player must accept. Obviously he was fully aware of the absence of grammatic authenticity.

Report brians July 9, 2022 8:49 AM BST
To novice isn't a verb so novicely isn't an adverb so neither is correct in my book. I would think , “ The horse jumped like a novice “ is correct as a novice is a noun.
Report The Knight July 9, 2022 1:24 PM BST
Gibberish...thanks for the compliment but why have I stabbed myself in the tender region with that line? Is it the capitals?

You don't book a cab in advanced, you book it in advance.

Hence, the can takes advance bookings and not advanced ones. Advanced is the wrong word to use in that context.
