It must be getting harder for on course bookmakers to have decent turnover with lower public attendance,so should the numbers be cut,and if so will they be compensated for loss of pitches? Is it still the same formula that determines how many books should attend?1 book for x public?

Was @ Ripon last night this happened...99% they are a complete waste of time now, was accom in the end fairly elsewhere.

I dont get why they dont rota, save everyone a bit of time, weighted to higher pitches.

Or alternatively just stand there every meeting and carrying on doing the same thing, copy n paste macheen, lay odd sky diver.

Why when you go to the course even bother backing with the boards? I don't know what prices they were on here but for sure better than what you took based on SP.
Report sparrow July 5, 2022 12:09 PM BST
I can't understand any seasoned punter going to the course and betting with the bookmakers but I suppose they are stuck in their ways.

-----------

The Ripon On-Course Bookies Board - The front 2 in the betting were  =  2/5 and 7/4

= £72 on the Fav and £36 on the second fav (TOTAL £108) to RETURN circa £100  = £8 LOSS if Either WON

Industry SP = 4/6 and 2/1  =  £60 on the FAV and £33 on the second fav (TOTAL £93) to RETURN £100  = £7 PROFIT

Betfair SP = 1.78 (8/11) and 3.45 (almost 5/2)  - £56 on the FAV and £29 on the second fav (TOTAL £85) to RETURN £100 less only a small marginal Commission on Profit)  =  £15 PROFIT

ripon on course bookies board + 2/5 and 7/4

well i laid an 800 to 1100 and a 1000 to 500 [ after did a little 9/4 ]
god knows where you get these fantasy figures from

the betting shows given are not from course bookmakers....i thought you knew that

So,are the courses going to reduce the amount of bookmakers standing as there appears to be less paying customers going racing all over the country, and ,if so,will the courses compensate the books that then become out of the numbers?
Also,it is noticeable how many racegoers still have their phones in their hand when walking round the ring.

Erm MAYBE LOOK AT MY PHOTO....

YES OR NO IS THERE A CLOWN IN THAT RING LAYING 2/5 AND 7/4???

could easily have been a first show when it was 20/1 bar two but you want to compare an opening show ? with sp's which doesn't work
i.ve already said bets i laid but neither of those were any problem
my big loser was the one backed from 20/1 down to 11/2...also a big place loss

I have been having a conversation about this topic for many many years and although it might sound a tad controversial there is absolutely no need for on course bookmakers in this day and age. Can anyone put a case across for keeping them as they are just commission agent and not true bookmakers.
Report Manoleeds July 12, 2022 12:03 PM BST
If you have been on course in France or the US where there are no bookmakers, it's soulless.
Report ItsMeSwaddle July 12, 2022 12:37 PM BST
Adge it was 10 mins before the start of the race?

I purposely gave the bookmakers a chance to give their “proper prices” and was obviously interested in his board the most as he stated he took a card bet.

As you’ll see from my status I was accommodated at 2/1 by a very fair book.
Exchange above but near 3 on my last glance.

Shame on you for not calling this pure Shyster out for what he is, takes the good reputation of decent books away.
Report ItsMeSwaddle July 12, 2022 12:40 PM BST
Actually checking a photo time stamp it was 12 mins prior to the race, hope this helps.

Is 2/5 7/4 8/1 16Bar acceptable in a 7 runner race?

I wouldn’t dare.

Heid.

I’m easy either way.

They can stand there or not stand there, can see an argument for both.

One thing is for sure though….they are not as important as they believe they are.

I don't know about that Manoleeds, I've been to Longchamp a good few times on 'Non Arc' days and always had a great time there.
Report sageform July 12, 2022 1:05 PM BST
Surely it is a market and, like mugs who pay £2 for Heinz soup when they could pay 65p for Tesco own brand, some punters will take poor odds. I don't go racing these days but, when I did, I always asked for a better price than the board one and quite often got it. I mostly bet with rails bookmakers. From my observation, you get bookmakers who want big turnover and low margins who offer a bit over the odds and others who prefer a low turnover from very poor prices.
