Is this the 3rd Mount Athos ?

3rd behind Sir Ivor in the 1968 Derby was the first Mount Atos, I think, as you say trained by JD. Marco Botti trained the second one!

Remember the first one ran behind Sir Ivor & Connaught at Epsom , ridden by Ron Hutchinson i'd imagine.

Looks like Luca Cumani trained the Second one - in the middle of it's career -
Scored a Hat-Trick first 3 starts for Luca, culminating in the Geoffrey Freer.

Later Won the Ormonde and Aston Park

Spencer was derided by Cumani for a couple of rides at Ascot and Goodwood when he had Mount Athos way out the back!! No surprise there then.

Mount Athos (GB) 1965. Was there a Cree Lodge connection? The dam Rosie Wings I'm pretty sure was trained at Cree Lodge.I'm maybe getting mixed up with Scottish Sinbad.

Rosie Wings was bought by Reg Tweedie (most famous generally as breeder/owner/trainer of Freddie) as a foal to give to his wife Betty as a birthday present. She was sent into training wsith Harry Whiteman at Malton, who then moved to Cree Lodge. She won 7 races, from a mile to a mile seven, including the Usher Brewery Gold Tankard (then Scotland's richest flat race) at Ayr.

At stud, her first 3 foals were Scottish Sinbad, Mount Athos, and John Splendid (Ayr Gold Cup). Between them, they won 23 races for their owner Sandy Struthers.

Mount Athos won his first 2 starts for Harry Whiteman, but Whiteman also had Doon, and he put them in the same race at Ayr (against Struthers' wishes in the case of Mount Athos, who had to give his stablemate 13 lbs). Doon won, and Struthers moved Mount Athos and Scottish Sinbad to John Dunlop, who subsequently received John Splendid, who Struthers bought at Doncaster Sales straight after Mount Athos ran (poorly) in the St Leger.

Altogether, Rosie Wings produced 13 foals, of which 11 were winners. In retirement, she became best friends with Freddie in the Tweedies' paddock. When Freddie died (aged 28), "Rosie broke away three times and returned to the spot where he had collapsed. Shortly afterwards she also passed away".

Doon finished 2nd to Vaguely Noble in the Observer Gold Cup at the end of his 2yo season, and was sold to race in the USA mid-way through the following season.

Rosie Wings' big win at Ayr was June 16, 1962, televised on BBC. The race was worth almost £5k, and was by far the most valuable of the day, with the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock coming in next. There was also racing at Sandown and Newmarket, where there was nothing over £1k.

It was the day before the World Cup final. Brazil beat Czechoslovakia 3-1. Garrincha was the star of the tournament, scoring 2 against England in the quarter final, and 2 against the hosts Chile in the semi. He runs today at Taunton, but has lost an 'r'.

Ged.Thanks for filling in the blanks in my memory around the early sixties. I think I was at Ayr the time Doon beat Mount Athos,and was certainly there when John Splendid won the Ayr Gold Cup. Rosie Wings was a remarkable mare. Seven houses and a wife change means I don't retain old form books etc. It's great to know that some on here can assist. Thanks again.

^^^  Koukash did have a Mount Athos that was bought on his behalf by agent Stephen Hillen for 190,000 guineas at the 2010 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale.  The horse was sent to David Wachman in Ireland having previously been in training with John Hills.

There was a Koukash-owned/Ian Williams-trained horse named Mount Abora that ran a few times in 2012 before being moved on to another trainer.

chav - Cumani trained that one. You might be thinking of Magic Circle, that Williams trained for him. They both ran in the Chester Cup and the Ormonde.
