the Liverpool badge was notoriously hard to get if i remember

Giuseppe Panini- believe first album was 1970(must be worth a few bob today) and if you got the first stickers think it was 1960 must be worth a small fortune.

1970 World Cup esso gave out coins for each team in the World Cup England been the holders was there gold coin at the top of the display.

I think it was called "Soccer Stars". We used to swap them in the school playground, but after all this there were a few that I couldn't get and we sent off for the remainder. Looking back it was a complete waste of money and it wouldn't have been cheaper if they brought out a magazine with all the pics in. But collecting was a big thing at that age (about 10). They brought out international soccer stars the next year, but that didn't really catch on.

I needed one for the full set in the books he was a Belgium player called Wilfred van more I think he played for standard liege but it seemed nobody else had him either ,but just before the World Cup I finally got him from one of those packs you bought at the paper shop I spent all my pocket money trying to get him,thinking back perhaps they didn’t issue him till late in the day.

jimnast .. i still have the 1970 england squad coin collection . i think you got a coin if you spent so much on petrol. mine was full one day one ....my uncle was a high flyer at esso . complete set given to me . nearly had to run for my life when i showed them all at school !

Good morning Windsor I should think if I searched around enough I would also have the full set,your right about spending at the pump not sure how much it was as I was to young to drive back then(now I am to old)however I am sure it was significantly less than you would today.

Always collected em as a kid. Could never fill em. Then when I got my first job, I got one and 2 full boxes and finally filled one.
 With regards the Liverpool badge (my team), it always took an age to get but then I suppose it's in the mind and likewise for other teams fans. They did em one year and all the badges were velvety to the touch. Loved them! |

 Yeah they cost a fortune and you could never fill a book, but my God I loved collecting em. You'd wait for the free album and stickers in Shoot magazine. Which also every year gave away the 'league ladders'. Loved it when they came out aswell. Anyone remember them? |

In our school a badge was worth 6 players and a team was 3. Who can forget slowly tearing the top of the packet back, hoping to see the glimmer of a badge. I got hold of a whole box from the newsagent once. Still never completed a whole album!

I collected them in the mid 90's when I was in primary school. Badges and football kits were "shinies". The badges being worth two football kits or about 6 players. One year every kid had about 20 David May's in their swap pile!
As someone else said. The excitement of opening a pack and seeing a glittery edge I will always remember! |

Bought Shoot for 4 weeks just to get the league ladders, then it was too much trouble keeping all four divisions updated and I couldn't be bothered maintaining them at all after another week. At least with the stickers, once they were in the album they didn't need any maintenance.

older forumites might remember those civil war bubble gum packs ,you got a bit of gum 4 or 5 cards iirc and 1 confederate dollar ,think they banned em after a while as many of the cards depicted scenes like soldiers on fire or being blown to kingdom come etc ,anyway was at a car boot a few years back bought a box of 60s toys and stuff and there was a good condition near full set of the cards and loads of the dollars stuck em on ebay and got around £80 the lot ,only paid a score for the box which had a load of other goodies in.

it would have been in the late 80s in primary school, collecting stickers in my panini album. i remember they had the scottish prem teams in there as well and not having a clue who any of the players or teams were

Remember swapping the football cards from the early 80's, used to do a card where you had most appearances, most goals, most expensive transfer....I always used to get loads Stoke City ones with Shilton on it.

I loved collecting them. My mum would always send off for the last few stickers to complete the album. I reckon it worked out cheaper for her doing it that way instead of buying pack after pack hoping to get the final few players needed. I think Mel Sterland evaded me one year!

They did. That Heart Of Midlothian velvet badge my all time favourite.  As you can tell from the time however, Dundee United are my one and only Scottish team. |

The early years of Soccer Stars were in gummed packets. After I started collecting them and getting endless doubles my dad bought a full box and steamed open the packets. He then replaced the requisite number of stickers in each pack before resealing them to sell.
