They clearly have an unbreakable contract to show every Irish race live. Farcical. The starter at Listowel was under orders to start at exactly the same time just to stuff Epsom for being late.

a poor show indeed but it is solvable by unifying the racing authorities when it comes to picture s. no good for either when this happens. i would not differentiate between uk and ire, just the quality of the race. it is controlled by a central authority who remove the decision from the stewards. cannot be that difficult.
those advocating a return to atr arent thinking straight. aside from the carp pics miles behind, the interminable low-rent adverts compromise their sh1te racing even now. they couldnt fit it in. of every hour broadcast, 61 minutes are adverts.
and when the pundits are looking at a 2 year old race, would you rather have the viewpoint of berry, or chapman showing off, or zoey birdbrain living down to her name? with a couple of exceptions the pundits on rtv are miles ahead of the atr garbage.
the whole sorry business could be fixed if ascot and a couple of others moved back to rtv. sky would then pull the plug, as just showing plumpton and the abbott would be too embarrassing. and the split screens would end as im unreliably informed rtv would take on another channel. simples.

I'm fairly certain the Irish wouldn't accept being shoved on to a second channel. And they can't shove poor UK races on to a second channel and cover a better Irish meeting on the main channel without losing UK viewers, it was RUK for years after all. It's just a mess.

its not a q of being shoved. it could be the same channel as now, just 2 of them and not this red button bolox, which ive never used. and they would be easily co-ordinated to minimise clashes. there would be more clashes on the garbage channel.
as i said, id do it by quality.
i dont care if its uk or ire, i just want to see the end of atr.

As an example if Irish took precedence over UK I know 2 people who would cancel there subs, they have no interest in Irish, it's not in the daily paper and they are of the typical age of many RTV subscribers. They want to sit down and enjoy an afternoon's racing , 3 meetings perfect, show the build up, race, after race connections etc, and show the results on screen. They are not up for constant channel hopping.

i think you are being a bit melodramatic. it doesnt happen that often, as evidenced by how few freds like this appear. and missing a few races over the course of a month aint sufficient reason to cancel something so cheap to watch, or free on the interweb.
and if your chums want to watch a novice hurdle at plumpton in preference to the irish champion stakes thats not something to be too concerned about.

I am also a pensioner but I can live with being able to watch every race live. When I was first a fan of the sport it was a blower commentary in a betting shop unless you were on course. Then the huge step forward to paid commentaries on the telephone and a few meetings on BBC and then ITV on big days. If you can't remember not having every race available live then think yourself lucky. It is annoying to have to switch channels but RTV could not cope with 8 meetings on an afternoon so you have to choose which to watch. I was trying to watch the French Open tennis and the Test match as well, then my rugby team, Gloucester, started at 3.00 so it was a bit hectic at times. I eventually decided it was Epsom only plus the other sport and that worked well. Having a 35/1 "winner" with Hoo Ya Mal place only certainly made my day.

I'm also a pensioner. And I get it. But this is a channel dedicated to Horse Racing and it was the DERBY. There have to be standards and this decision, contract or no contract, devalues heritage. It was crass, stupid and disrespectful.

Platitudes from an unnamed RTV spokesman this morning including this gem ".... viewers can watch dedicated streams from each racecourses on Racing TV Extra,.." As I said, Nick Luck had already said that Listowel were holding, so for those fearing the worst (your's truly), nothing to be concerned about. The Derby starts in full screen and after a few seconds there's Listowel in the corner. So what do you expect us to do RTV? Abandon the 50" HD and scrabble about to get a laptop feed on the Extra channel, only to find the race over by the time we've got it up? Had Luck not said what he did, the computer would be have been up and running. Yes I'd still be cursing the stupidity of the split, but at least it would be only the classic on screen.
He then compounds the total idiocy with "When races don't go off on time, the betting opportunities are reduced and it compromises the viewing experience.”
Betting oportunities! FFS man get your priorities straight! There was one thing that compromised the viewing experience, and it wasn't the delayed start. Pathetic.
The Tramore course manager Owen Byrne provides a bit of sanity. "I think people have to be able to react to these things on the ground and roll with it."

Contract or no contract, was a very stupid thing to do with the derby. Sure they could be covered by streaming it 'live' online. Sometimes common sense just has to prevail.

They obviously must realise that they had a brain dead producer calling the shots on this. Ludicrous incompetence doesn't even cover this fiasco. Absolutely pathetic.

And some criticism of Listowel is due by the way. They obviously had no interest in cooperating and must have lost thousands of viewers, doing nothing for the so called "betting opportunities" on their race.

ATR would have had that Irish race at one time and there wouldn't have been a problem. People might not like Sky Racing but I prefer that to the present mess.

Sparrow, I’ve known ATR completely refuse to show a British race if a big Irish or French race is scheduled at the same time. Also they show Happy Valley like no tomorrow if it’s likely to finish first. Equal garbage!

If its a Group race then its understandable for ATR to do that but I agree that Happy Valley etc should have no place on the channel. The idea that the Derby can be shown on a split screen is outrageous for a channel charging £24.98 a month.

jmdc, you are right and you put the blame where it belongs. I understand that the Irish race went off on time while the Derby was late but they could easily have waited if there was any will to co-operate with the BHA. I can't believe that a GB track would have done that if it was the Irish Derby involved. What RUK and Sky do or don't do is governed by contractual arrangements that might change next year but for now they rely on the common sense of other racecourses which was sadly lacking on Saturday. At the same time Epsom need to learn some lessons. 1. No more fireworks. 2. More security staff to head off protesters who try to trespass on the course. 3. INSTRUCT jockeys to be at the start 5 minutes before the off (they went down in plenty of time) and heavily fine those who deliberately hang back. And an extra starting official at the 8 and 10 furlong posts to identify the culprits.

Being a RTV subscriber I don't expect to have to switch to ITV to avoid a split screen for the Derby of all races!
Bang on sparrow. ATR/SKY racing is free and I honestly think even they wouldn't dare split the screen with the derby. Why this is even a debate is beyond me. Awful from RTV and they have to take it on the chin. Ridiculous.
And fwiw, SKY have a massive hard on with Happy Valley for some reason. Quite annoying as Betfair don't entertain it.
