John Robert Earnshaw Sutcliffe (1940 - 2021), son of John Earnshaw Sutcliffe (1906 - 1975).

John senior trained Specify to win the Grand National in 1971, and Cala Mesquida to win the Schweppes in the same year. The son started training before the father, and won the Schweppes (with Elan) before his dad did, though his dad went on to win it twice, and score a 1-2 in it. John junior was champion amateur jockey while he was assistant trainer to Ryan Price.

Thanks Andrew for posting that clip.
Very nostalgic indeed.
Mummy`s Pet was a great wee horse.
And Swing Easy and Fireside Chat a blast from the past.

... and not to mention the truly great BG.

There was another runner but didn`t get it`s name which is a pity.

And Ged too.

Cala Mesquida and Specify were two special horses indeed.

It`s great just to hear these wonderful horse`s names again.

John Sutcliffe snr and jnr trained so many very good horses.

John jnr ran a tipping service for many years after he retired.

Going purely on memory pretty sure Fireside Chat beat long odds on Mill Reef into 2nd on debut , possibly Salisbury ?

Don`t laugh but my curiosity got the better of me and I finally bought a copy of Ted on blu ray after all these years plugging it by your good self.

Crude but good would be the best way of describing it but what a laugh it was LaughLaugh

Cheers!

Good man TMM, lol.

Look, it's not going to go down in the top ten on most peoples' lists of best movies ever made but it has its place.

Hayden you are getting mixed up. Mill Reef won on debut at Salisbury and Fireside Chat was long odds on.

Yes Johnny indeed. That fight scene had me in stitches, lol. Family thought I was taking a turn LaughLaugh

Mill Reef only beaten by My Swallow and Brigadier Gerard, and Brigadier Gerard only beaten by Roberto. Two greats at the same time.

Mill Reef was only beaten twice. Firstly, in the Prix Robert Papin at Maisons Laffite by My Swallow as a 2-y-o and secondly by the Brigadier in the Guineas.

..... I have been racking my memory cells and I can`t retract from my memory cells who trained Fireside Chat but I know I know. Crazy

Cheers Mac , shouldn't have forgotten that it was only 50 years ago.

Fireside Chat was trained by Fulke Johnson-Houghton as a 2yo, when he was owned by Charles Engelhard (presumably named after FDR's 'fireside chats'). He must have sparkled early, as he went off 6/5 fav in a 27-runner maiden at Newmarket on debut, and won by 4 and 3 on his debut. (My Swallow should have made his debut in the same race, but was withdrawn at the start - would have been interesting!). Engelhard died the following March, and the horse was bought by Doug Marks in the July. Marks trained him subsequently, and won pattern races in France and Germany with him.

Cheers ged, great stuff.

lol Hayden! It was only your original post which rattled my memory cells because I knew for certain that the legendary Mill Reef was only between twice! Ian Balding always liked to introduce his best 2-y-o`s at Salisbury. I always bet his son`s Salisbury debutants to this day. Father like son and all that.

Thanks Mac

I've only got the memory box these days , given all my reference books away to someone that will actually use them

It`s funny Hayden that I can remember way back then but can`t remember what I bet yesterday. Cry

Racing was more interesting back then when we had all these individual owner/breeders and industrial magnates racing against each other.

So many of these famous colours which we were brought up with have sadly disappeared. Sad

The era 5 years each side of Brigadier Gerard has to be the best ever, Sea Bird, Royal Palace, Humble Duty, Sir Ivor, Nijinsky, BG, Mill Reef and Grundy to name a few.

Hayden, you hade it the wrong way round. Mill Reef went off at 8/1 (I believe)on debut and beat long odds on Fireside Chat. I know as I had F C in a 100 double with another short priced loser. I also got my fingers burnt at Newbury the same year when I went all in on the appropriately named Young and Foolish who was beaten by the Brigadier 1st time out at 14/1.
