I have seldom seen so many horses fall or make a mistake at the last when well in contention as they have today at Punchestown. If JP had a punt on Glenquin Castle he must feel rather relieved. Ferny Hollow was no certainty either.

No not that day foyles I usually go to the two day meeting arc weekend and thyestis day.which by the way if you ever got a chance to go that day it’s a great occasion.

Agree Jimnast - But it's hard to know how fit he was. He beat a 150-rated hurdler who's best fresh. His jumping was a mixed bag (though good when it mattered). I guess he'll go for the G1 at Christmas, which will tell us more.

Ferny Hollow beat an extremely fragile horse who is a serial weak finisher, and hasn't won a race for more than two years. The price cut for the Arkle was more a case of we have cut something after yesterday's race at Sandown which fell apart.
Has Jones moved all his horses from O'Loughlin? If so that association didn't last much beyond Cedarwood Road going backwards as a chaser.

Interesting listening to Barry Geraghty say straight after the race that Ferny Hollow only started to jump well when he had company. You wonder if they'll revert to hold up tactics next time. I thought the second horse threw in the towel which obviously helped the winner.

Good point about Allaho DD. I was hoping we'd see him in the King George, which I think would really suit him, but it might be asking a lot in 21 days time.

AF was running the same race as LTO here and would have won this pulling a cart,I'm afraid though it has Carvills Hill syndrome and the fences seem to get in the way.

Carvills Hill was a real favourite of mine. Ability wise he was in a different league to Asterion Forlonge. People describe Carvill's Hill as a bad jumper, but for me he was essentially an extremely good jumper off a decent stride, but struggled to organise himself when asked to shorten.
This was his last run from his novice season conceding two stone in a handicap. He would have been unbeaten in Ireland, but for falling at Leopardstown with the race won. On his only other run that season he fell in Desert Orchid's Gold Cup.

He makes a complete hash of the last two, but I think the problem was probably the jock easing him down, and trying to get him to pop them. Prior to that he had demonstrated so much scope in gaining ground at many of the fences.

bit early to say carvills hill is in a different league to asterion forlonge ,i struggle to think of a good horse carvills hill beat ,even nick the brief beat him in the irish gold cup,and he could only manage 5th of 8 in cool grounds gold cup,to early to be certain yesterday but you would have thought asterion would have gone very close against good horses unlike the slow ones carvills hill beat,i do obviously accept he was brilliant in the welsh national.

I also liked Carvills Hill and backed him for the Welsh National in a winning double with a runner the previous day. I didn't see the race as i was somewhere between Göteborg and Harwich on the ferry and had to use a 'ship to shore' phone and call my Mum for the result.
Sadly the Gold Cup was his undoing.

Katabatic and Celtic Shot were both rated 172

Yes he did seem very good around Chepstow andrew not sure 3 mile around Chepstow was katabatics cup of tea,Celtic shot remarkably sent of 5/2 favourite for a gold cup

I think many liked Carvills Hill simply due to the way he ran from the front and of course Martin Pipe was revered by punters.
Having said this he was only a graded handicapper after all, never won a G1 (only contested one) and many of his wins were listed class.

He contested 2 gold cups Andrew fell behind dessie and last of 5 finishers behind cool ground, yes his style was great to watch and off course he was a good horse ,but so might asterion in time ,he is a bit of a nutter in fact put the horse I backed in the supreme novice on the deck through his erratic jumping ,but something tells me he will be pretty special one day I had a feeling al boum photo would after he fell in a sun alliance we’ll beat at the time and running out at punchestown although not the horses fault I just think this fellow will get it all together at some stage.

I would argue that Carvill's Hill was one of, if not the best since Arkle.
It wasn't just who he beat, but the weight he conceded and the complete domination of the opposition. Very few horses in recent years have even attempted to concede weight in decent races. Desert Orchid and Denman? Kauto Star never even tried. It would probably have finished him.
Carvill's Hill was a champion novice hurdler, champion novice chaser, and a champion in open company. Most people only know him for the Welsh National demolition, and what happened in the Gold Cup. Fortunately, there are several clips of his performances on You Tube.
This is him bolting up in a novice hurdle. Redundant Pal wasn't a bad horse and he has absolutely hammered him on the bridle.

This is him winning the Irish Gold Cup as a novice:-

As regards the Nick The Brief defeat that came a week after he had conceded two stone and more in the Harold Clarke Chase. That was the sort of thing only Arkle used to attempt. A fresh horse and he trounces Nick The Brief.

I still believe the greatest 2 miler ever Badsworth Boy would have seen off Bobsline if he had not slithered to the ground .......but even if he lost it would be great to be able to view one of these alternate universes some scientists tell us about ,where Bobsline does not fall and we see them battle it out.

The only two 2 milers I saw that would have given badsworth a race were Moscow flyer and sprinter sacre and as Micheal Dickinson amusingly said sprinters went missing in action for a while, remittance man and pearlyman were both very good

Sprinter Sacre at his peak would be the one of interest.
When he won his first QM , I had my biggest ever bet £1000 at 1/4 .....it was never in doubt.....but of course it was ,his next race was the pulled up race.
I learnt a lesson that day.

Other than the Champion Chase films there isn't much footage of Badsworth Boy. What horses of note did he beat? As was the norm at the time he was a converted ex-flat horse and the brief notes on Wiki suggests jumping might also have been an issue. How many times did he end up on the deck?

He hit the deck quite a few times away from Cheltenham. His slick low jumping style left no error margin.
He beat Rathgorman (previous year QM winner) , Artifice , Little Bay , Bobsline , News King to name but a few.
In the 1981 Champion Hurdle he jumped the second last level with Sea Pigeon on his outside before being put in his place finishing sixth.
I believe his trainer said he was his best horse.......think of all the other he trained. He all kinds of issues and yet still won 3 QM by at least 10 lengths and one by a distance .......under hands and heels.
It wasn't the greatest era ....but he stands alone on his achievemets.

I think Carvill's Hill had plenty of physical issues as well, which I guess got worse with age. Jumping is the first negative people will throw at him, but I don't hear that being thrown at other horses, presumably in Badsworth Boy's case because people just remember the three Festival wins? Moscow Flyer had six failed completions, but again those are largely overlooked.

Unless you believe that unseated rider doesn't originate from a blunder then that's just splitting hairs.
Carvills Hill 3 falls from 25 starts, the initial bumper second is overlooked on some accounts.

Carvills Hill on soft ground at Chepstow beating up handicappers was a sight to behold.
A quicker pace in the Gold Cup against better horses was always going to find his jumping out.

Carvills Hill was a monster, although I think Denman was a similar type and eclipsed him by winning a Gold Cup and winning equally impressive handicap wins in the Hennessey twice. Carvills Hill Welsh National demolition win was fantastic to watch. I remember Ladbrokes went out on a limb and offered 3/1 was it in the morning?
Carvills Hill definitely had a physical issue when trained by Draper, Pipe mentioned he had to sort it out. Ran four times for Pipe winning three times inc Wesh National and then was given a poor ride by Scudamore in the Gold Cup. All the talk beforehand was about Jenny Pitman using Golden Freeze as a stalking horse to get Carvill's Hill on the floor. Peter Scudamore seemed to lose his head at the start and dashed frantically to the first and Carvill’s Hill crashed through it and lost the race there and then, the horse incurring chest and tendon injuries and was brave even to continue. For the next mile Michael Bowlby reining in Golden Freeze between fences to let Carvill's Hill catch up so he could comprehensively out jump him again. The sight of Carvill's Hill staggering up the straight and over the line in last place was memorable as was The Fellow throwing the race away to Cool Ground by jumping the last so slowly.

A hot looking renewal this year eg a young Gold Cup pretender in Fact To File (9/4f), Fastorslow (5/2) and Galopin Des Champ (4/1). The distance of 2m 3f could be on the short side for Galopin Des Champ, but the price is tempting.

By 8L and 4L. Top weight in Kim muir, hard again.
Beat chianti Classico,
Un beaten at 3m plus
Looks totally unexposed at staying chases.
It might be that good that this could be a prep for bigger days.

Fact To File (FTF) - stablemate of Galopin Des Champ (GDC) - is a big drifter. He's out to 5.8 here from 3.2; GDC is into 3.55 from over 5.5.
Another dodgy betting from the most high profiled stable in Ireland fot a prestigious Gold Cup prep race.

Anyone with inside info as to why Fact To File has been friendless since yesterday despite being a shortie antpost for this? Does he still resemble a Michelin man or plainly not ready?

A fab race to watch. The same result come Cheltenham next March? Fact To File needs to polish up jumping esp at Cheltenham going downhill; the longer distance will be to the forte of Galopin Des Champ; Fastorslow has had nis days in the sun, I think.

I'm so glad JP owns Fact To File and Spillane's Tower. Any other eg Ricci, Wylie, Donnelly, etc, Mr Mullins would have avoided the duel until Cheltenham.
I think the winner Fact To File, if staying 3m 2.25f up the Cheltenham hill, is a very formidable adversary to Galopin Des Champ 3rd successive Gold Cup triumph.
