Morning All,
I realise that this probably isn't the place for the thread but wanted an opinion from regulars.
My friend has woken up this morning unable to get into his BF account. After an hour on chat, it turns out that someone has tried to hack into to it albeit unsuccessfully. BF have now taken the decision to close the account on grounds of a security risk.
He is a very casual punter who bets generally with a longer term view (antepost on the football, cheltenham festival, King george etc). A number of his antepost selections have shortened in the nature of antepost betting. However in closing the account BF have stated that they will refund the stakes and where bonus credit was used on BF exchange, they would just be voided.
Is this a stroke of brutal bad luck? Or would he have a chance of having either the account re-opened or a new account credited with the prior bets?

Why on Earth would they close the account? Secure the account via a password change and 2-step authentication, job jobbed, no?
What I would say is don't take the word of any of the customer service monkeys on live chat.
Several others who have had account issues have had very favourable responses from the Betfair CEO, Peter Jackson. Someone will post his email address shortly, I'm sure.

seems a bit odd, don't think the full details are there. Certainly he should a) insist he gets the cash out value of his bets b) if that isn't forthcoming ask for the matter to be dealt with as a complaint so he can go to dispute resolution.
I think that sending emails to the CEO before other avenues have been investigated, is likely to diminish the value of that channel.

From what I understand, BF have stated via live chat that the account will be closed with bets in the sportsbook being voided and original stakes returned. With his AP bets on the exchange essentially being lost as promotional credit was used rather than withdrawal-able funds.
That's a good point RE cash out values. If they were refunded, technically speaking he should be able to use that value to be rebet to a level that takes him close to the original value....not that cash outs ever work like that

So if you have an ante-post bet on something in the Gold Cup at 100/1, day before the race it's 13/8 all they have to say is someone tried to hack your account, here's the stake on the 100/1 shot back.

There isn't a court in the land that will not make them honour the ante post bets win or lose.
if you back one ante-post at 6/4 & it drifts to 100/1, get someone to try & hack into your account. bf will then close your account and refund your bets.
...unless the user has multiple accounts (for pc avoidance or bonus abuse) in which case they'd do exactly what they've done and close the account
Back in foot and mouth year I did a lot of anti post laying,almost had it to myself I remember when the meeting was abandoned back then you could speak to betfair they didn’t know for around 4 weeks what to do with the bets they just hung on saying the fixture might be re run,every other bookmaker just refunded straight away ,I know this is a different situation but they have often done things to suit themselves just look at the Irish mare that won over Christmas a few years ago nobody got paid because they blame a bot.
im with dave, more to the story on one side or the other than given
yours won but someone tried to hack into your account as they were jumping the last, so we've voided your bet & refunded your stake ...
I wonder what explanation they have provided to the people on the other side of the bets that have been voided?
Good chance the other side is Paddy himself. Market went against him, how we gonna get out of this. Just make up some random excuse and give him his money back. Hope he doesn't go on the forum and tell everyone.

No, I think not.
The OP said the attempt to hack the account had been unsuccessful - so the hacker doesn't know the password (or 2FA is already enabled).
But the hacker has tried so many times to unsuccessfully guess the password that the account has been locked out.
It's a fair bet the hacker will keep doing that (the attempts are probably automated) so the account will be continually locked out; the OP's friend does unfortunately need a fresh account.

If your interpretation is correct, Longbridge, surely the right thing for BF to do would be to transfer the bets currently lodged against the OP's friend's account to a "clean" one?
As others have pointed out, simply having the power to void specific bets (matched legitimately) within a market sets a very dangerous precedent anytime BF (in whatever guise) ends up on the wrong side of an ante-post wager...

I don't disagree at all about transferring the bets.
it might be a misinterpretation from CS ie the security area says the account will have to be closed the CS area reads from a script about accounts being closed for eg responsible gambling reasons when called.
this happened to me and 1 other on the same day. suggesting it was a notfair problem. was told to open another account, and re-send all the kfc bollox. i refused and after 500 years on livechat i finally talked them into transferring my cash from one account to another, but it was painful. but did lose access to the forum
