bought 2 tickets touts outside county stand £50 x2 went on the champagne lawn its a disgrace all the plastic seats were taken and they dont supply more, was a struggle but eventually managed to get 2 plastic seats and a table, young couple who took pity on us, hundreds were after seats you had to protect them they were like gold dust and hundreds complaining, what a rip off the whole show is the champagne at york veuve clicquot is £65 same stuff here £88, even rubbish champers was 59, 2 dry pork pulled baps 2 x 7-50, pint carslsberg 5, bus teturn from station 5 at york 3, but the biggest fraud and con were the bookmakers on the champagne lawn some big names should hold there heads in shame they should be wearing masks nearly every runner were shorter than the main tatts ring 100 yds away, everything at least 1 point shorter minimum on nearly everything the frankie horse in the leger was 7/1 general at least 4 points shorter every flipping one of them 11/1 in tatts scandalous fraud taking advantage from drunk racegoers, the tatts bookmaks seemed fair the fav in the ledger saw lots of 5/6, its seriously rough at doncaster im afraid and the lady said never again, compared to york there is no comparison

there was a period around the late 90s when i thought the st leger meeting was on a par with the ebor meeting know all both in terms of the racing and the day out,since they built the aeroplane hanger that is nowhere near the case,the place is at best poor you get nothing for paying the extra to go in members,i will put up with the place in the jump season but no more flat racing there for me.

Agree Jimnast,don't mind Donny in general but didn't enjoy the week particularly,the handicaps very uncompetitive as we said.
Know all,fair points,the books on the lawn will have had at least 3 % a runner on the board and who's to say they're wrong as with the results this week they will be the ones with comfortably the biggest profit. |

How many years do you have to go back and say you visited a racecourse and actually were quite pleased with
the value for money as regards entrance and food and drinks. ?? Lets be honest racegoers have been treated as a " captive audience" since time began, its only going to get worse with most traders looking to make up for a poor past 18 months. Its best to get in the mindset that you are going to be Fleeced at every opportunity and be well aware or just dont go.! |

yes ribero the handicaps were very weak,i still think some of the races were pretty good although short of runners,st leger was good as it always seems to be even though it seems people every year turn there noses up at the race{just look at that egg and spoon st leger this afternoon}for me its doncaster flat on the tele from now on,we stayed over friday night with the view of having a few drinks friday afternoon ,never had a drop not a single place on the track appealed as a place to sit down for an hour,york you are spoilt for choice.

glasgow spot on about traders looking to make up for the last 18 months {uk hoteliers in particular}some tracks poor value for a day out but the likes of york and i know many wont agree royal ascot are worth every penny.

Doesn't surprise me you couldn't find anywhere to have a drink jimnast,re handicaps I appreciate getting your horses well handicapped is part of the job and much easier for the big trainers who now often bring potential group horses softly softly through the handicaps to bag some big ones on the way but maybe because he runs plenty in the north and I notice it more I am constantly amazed how Haggas seems to get away with it,the Portland winner beaten less than a length (finishing fast) in a valuable York handicap stays on the same mark,the winner the completely exposed Copper knight (7 y o) goes up 4 for finishing 3/4 length and a neck in front of him.

yes you only have to listen to haggas ribero to realise he would expect to be looked after better than others.

good call elisjohn i do accept there are some decent races at longchamp and deauville but on the whole i dont enjoy french racing even arc weekend only the arc itself interests me.
swaddle its hard to belief now but doncaster use to be a great day out. |

Interesting to read comparisons of Longchamp and Doncaster. I wonder if the racegoer at Doncaster pays more or less for the days racing including admission and catering than the one in France.

I am talking about many years ago but Longchamp was very cheap when I last went for the Trials day (Vermeille, Foy etc). Something like 10 euros for the best enclosure.

When Peintre Celebre won the Arc it was €5 on the gate (including access to stand), but that was a long time ago. In 2018 it was €65 main stand or €30 Jardin de l’Arc enclosure.

Was that since the rebuild? I guess it was. I also went to Arlington Park in 1991 and paid $2 entry and another $5 for a seat It was not their biggest meeting but still a Grade 1 race won by Black Tie Affair who went on to win the Breeders Cup classic that year. He was the biggest flat racehorse I have ever seen in the flesh.

Yes 2nd Arc after rebuild. It was a magnitude more expensive for everything which now has to be factored in when next travelling over. It used to be a cheap day at the races (subject to betting) counterbalanced by the cost of going out in Paris.
