Nice to still see him at it. To be fair he must have been rubbing his hands before that last race all those years ago. laying it even at better odds than the surrounding pitches were, as he clearly thought it was money in the bank. ive had a few wallet smashers over the years, but cant imagine the feeling he had when it hung on...

I've always appreciated gary since one afternoon at Wolverhampton, when I went up to him to back a horse where he was the stand-out price. He knew how hard of hearing I am.
"Look," he said. "I know you won't have heard the commentator. That horse has got loose." And there it was indeed, running around down the back straight without a jockey.
Great to see how much weight he's lost too. Well done. I always picture him at Southwell, making full use of the refreshment areas, tottering back to his pitch beneath a pile of pizza, chips, hog roasts and crisps, with a tin of Diet Coke perched on the top.

In the name of balance perhaps there should a statute of Gary Wiltshire, next to Frankie Dettori's statute at Ascot racecourse! The “seven winners in a day” story was not just about one person. There were the horses, the stable staff, the trainers, the people who saw it happen and the bookies who took a bashing.
From what forumites have said Gary is quite a character, one with some integrity, a quality sorely needed in the horse racing world these days.
Also, to contemporise the scene at Ascot we could have some statues depicting a punch-up alongside the Victorian racegoers near the pre-parade ring. Although no doubt punch-ups have always been part of racing.
TINotaTON we might need to crowdfund to get Gary's two bottom teeth replaced!

Must be 25 years since he handed me a couple of Scottish £100 pound notes in my winnings one afternoon at Stratford, i never batted an eyelid as i stuffed them into my wallet even though they looked like play money , which was more than the teller at the bank did when i banked them.

Tony (G & T) Williams once paid me with a £100 note from the Allied Irish Bank one Saturday afternoon at Bath 20-odd years ago. The rest of the afternoon went less well, and by the end of it that note was the only readies I had left. Which is why I ended up having to use it to buy a pint of milk on Sunday morning. I'm pleased to say that the girl in the Castle Cary Co-op did not bat an eyelid. Folk in rural Zummerset are evidently a bit too worldly for that.

I was paid out with scottish £100 notes at Aintree some years ago. Anybody remember the year it was a horse called Barton in the big novice race'? I had to back the first odds on shot with the tote to make sure it was legit. Went out in the evening to a greek restaurant where I told my mates that if the waiter takes the note I will pay for the meal in as I thought it was sure to be rejected. To my cost it wasnt!!!

Barton was actually first past the post in that Huntingdon but was disqualified for running the wrong side of a hurdle wing early in the race but carried on. He also whipped round at the start!

jimnast - My post @ 8.07 was referencing the crowd not the racing . I guess I didn't make that clear but wasn't fully awake at time of reading your previous post . Apologies , Reynard

No need to apologise reynard however from what I’ve seen I much prefer the Friday Saturday crowd at aintree than the goodwood Friday Saturday crowd.
Good luck

Jimnast, did you pre-book,pay on the door, or go in the middle for £5. I was thinking of driving the 180 miles to go, but would have relied on walk-ins being available. Size of crowd ?

I remember when Oxford Greyhounds got rid of him because of pressure from off course bookmakers.
If you could bring back one track which would it be and why ? I’d love to bring back all of the tracks that we’ve lost over the years but if i’m restricted to just the one I’d have to say Oxford. I loved it there , especially on a Friday afternoon. The local Rover factory would see their shift end at 2pm and many of the lads would head straight over to the track, pockets full of wages and hoping to turn it into a nice few quid. I loved it but it was actually a willingness to take on such punters that ended up with me getting the sack there. A representative of the big three firms wanted to shorten a dog up for a monkey bet. I said ‘I’ve just laid it for a couple of grand at 7/2 you’ll have to have more on’. He obviously wasn’t too happy about this. The last race of the meeting was 6.16pm, by 7pm the track manager John Blake had rung me up to say my services would no longer be required at BAGS meetings

No I never went there BB, I did move to Hertfordshire not far from the stadium though but just after the track closed. I went to Henlow and Walthamstow instead. I grew to really like Walthamstow and when that went the game was gone for me.

Saturday, Hackney Wick in the mornings,Haringayi in the frozen Saturday afternoons, then on to the White City in the evening. Hard to match in my opinion.

White City, especially on Derby night. I miss Peterborough now its gone, not able to pop down there on a boring Saturday night anymore. I used to go when i was 14/15 and lock my bike to a post and climb on the saddle to get over the wall. Rex knew how i got in but turned a blind eye. Those were the days you could get a bet on when underaged, no id needed then.
