i deposited £500 with Wil Hill, never had a bet because their website was crap, and I had to prove ID to withdraw my own money

In 60 years of betting, and last 18 on here, I have never had to produce anything.

Funnily enough I'm just off the phone to Manny Bernstein and my account is still active. I'm going to give them a go after many years as I can actually phone them to place a bet instead of trying to navigate websites with multiple usernames and passwords. Would have to be careful putting on a £10 L15 as an example mind you as their limit is 100k on horseracing and maybe less on other sports. Just had to update my card details.

think phoning gamblers anonymous would be more productive for you stewb

Still here after 18 years. Must be doing something right.

Anything more than £20 is iffy esp on antepost. Bad experience never want to be repeated again. Promotions are irrelevant if one cannot withdraw one's jolly.

It was (almost certainly still is) a requirement of Know You Customer (KYC), going back probably 15 years or more.  I've only had to do it once here.

I have not had to show anything for either betfair in 2002 and purple in around 2010. I only use exchanges.

Well you absolutely should have done.  It's a legal requirement of Betfair as part of anti-money laundering regualtions.

It's been a while, but almost certainly photo ID and I definitely had to scan front and back of debit card for someone (poss here).

Only time I had to scan my debit card was for 2 step authentication a few years ago and certainly never sent any photos.

Looking at BF's FAQs, it does look like they may be able to verify some account-holders "electronically".  I don't remember that being a thing when it was introduced, but I might be wrong....  I definitely had to submit photo ID. https://support.betfair.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/71

I'm 99.99% certain it was a while after BF's inception.  I would guess KYC was brought in somewhere in the 2003-2006 timeframe.  There was lots of chat about it on here at the time.

Because KYC didn't exist at BF's inception.  It was anti-money laundering regulation that was either brought in or updated after then.

Maybe because your KYC check completed successfully electronically behind the scenes.  I'm guessing.  I 100% categorically had to submit photo ID several years after joining BF.

Length of time at an address might be relevant?  I only moved in here in summer 2002.

You will have submitted a photo of your debit card years later as I did for 2 step authentication and that's it.

I only set up 2-step about 18 months ago, and I didn't have to do that then.  I've not scanned a card for 10 years or more.

Sorry for the delay sparrow I was at the hospital. Yes I did. My passport and my council tax bill for Know Your Customer. I suspected it was to stop money laundering. That was both exchanges and why I asked my original question. I was told by bet way a couple of years ago that before any winnings went into my account I would have to produce ID. This from customer services in South Africa.

Needless to say I've never used them.

I know sparrow. No idea why.

All that was required was my name and address which they could check on the electoral register and my bank details.

I wasn't on the electoral register at the time. Maybe that?
