You got to know when to hold 'em, Know when to fold 'em, Know when to walk away, And know when to run. You never count your money When you're sittin' at the table. There'll be time enough for countin' When the dealing's done.

appalling advice, you should know how much you and your opponents have in front of them all the time.

The meaning is counting money as owned. Detaching yourself from all the money in the game allows you to make the best play at all times. The most fun way to play poker is to play as unpredictable as possible = raising with trash and calling with monsters to lay traps etc..

I thought the line was a metaphor for life itself, but when someone goes allin and you have second pair, it is a good idea to know how much is at stake.

btw I had a look at a basic training course the other week to see what the kidz were up to. By lesson three they were using calculus to work out an optimum bet size, so I think the game has move on from "raising with trash and calling with monsters to lay traps etc."

Actually this is the "final version", game theory optimal, but it is so complex that very few people are getting anywhere near mastering it and many are using computer assistance. So the future (post covid) is live face to face, just the way Kenny's man played it.

The game can "move on" all it wants, the fact remains it's just another 'game' that stirs emotions. Sticking to strict math/"calculus" is easier said than done when a player is playing in such a way that is looking to tilt. Like I said, being unpredictable and virtually impossible to read remains the most fun way to play the game(and just as profitable as any other style) I realize I've done a great job at a table when I'm being attacked from all angles and verbally abused with "go **** your dead mother!" etc..
