Here is the thinking to try and make it different from the usual comps, no point of me copying others, but hopefully not to complicated.
It depends on numbers, say we get 32 runners, I will draw groups of 4 people (drawn randomly). Top 2 in the group qualify for the knockout stages. (13 days a round). If we get more than 16 but less than 32 it is most likely the round of 16 will be scrapped and straight to QF’s. To be confirmed.
The winner of group A plays the runner up of group B and gains a small advantage for winning the group by being nominated the home team in the knockout rounds. The away team would be forced to make their selection by 10am each day, the home team would obviously get to see the other persons (away team) selection and have right up until the 1st race goes off to make their own selection, giving a small advantage for winning the group.
Each round will be 13 days with a 1 day rest afterwards.
Potential start date Monday January 6th and here is a brief schedule:
Monday 6th Jan until Sat 18th Jan - Group Stages Monday 20th Jan until Sat 1st Feb - Last 16 Monday 3rd Feb until Sat 15th Feb - Quarters Monday 17th Feb until Sat 29th Feb - Semi’s Monday 2nd March until Sat 14th March - Final.
A potential twist to the final shall apply: Each finalist will choose 3 players each that have been already knocked out the comp. They will team up with the finalist (The apprentice style) and make selections which will contribute to the finalists total, weighted so that the finalists selections are the most important 6pt each and the selected team mates selections are 2pt each or something similar.
Wildcards are to be used per round per person once only - Any unused will not be compensated (must be used before the last day)
-NAP selection (double points) -NB (1.5 points) -Phone a friend (use a selection that someone has already made for that day as your own, 2 selections running for you on the day) -Elect a meeting wildcard (everyone in the group has to use the nominated meeting on that day you play this card) -Last day (double points for everyones selections)
Staking should be 2pt per day, you can bet 2pt win or 1pt EW to standard place terms only. The settlement will be done to official SP.
I am not sure what we will do about potential posting issues, Stridings comp was great and it was ruined by everyones inability to post for a few days on the trot.
ANY IDEAS WELCOME AND WILL BE CONSIDERED!

on a serious note swaddle my suggestion for when the site goes down is void the days when its clear there are problems ,my other half could not post for 4 days last weekend and those days counted against her in the divisions which i felt was unfair, that said its only a bit of fun nobody died.

the most pertinent issue is internet access so i suggest you use the royal post service.
if swad puts his address up people can send selections direct to his house.

Jim I knew them pesky SP's would come in handy for something! It might mean breaking even a competitive total in this comp now

just realised the date of the last post on there was the date I was banned....think it was a time when common sense went out of the window and if you even strayed from the narrow path of political correctness you were reported and in my case banned however hopefully that madness has now passed by.Anyway Norfolk don't want to start a debate on Swaddle's thread....am just glad to be back.

Think you are over complicating it swaddy An individual comp shouldn't rely on others They might not even look in once kicked out The meeting wildcard might be too late for someone who has picked night before etc

I feel you need a touch of PREMIERSHIP class so you can count me in. Looking forward to drawing Norfolk I'd echo what has been said about keeping it as simple as possible btw.

DRAW TO FOLLOW TOMORROW - PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WISH TO WITHDRAW AS YOU CANT PLAY OR YOU ARE UNSUITED BY THE FORMAT! WE WILL TRY AND FILL ALL 32 SPACES.
Q and A’s regarding the competition format and rules.
Format
Group Stages : Monday 4th Jan - Saturday 16th Jan Round of 16: Monday 18th Jan - Saturday 30th Jan QF: Monday 1st Feb - Saturday 13th Feb Semis: Monday 15th Feb- Saturday 27th Feb Final: Monday 1st March - Saturday 13th Mar
Each round will last 13 days (Monday to the following Saturday).
Draws for the next round will take place in-between final results on the Sat and the end of Sunday, ahead of the new round starting on the Monday.
Each player will make 1 selection per day at any UK/IRE meeting.
Substitutes can be offered against your original selection which will be used if your original selection is void or a non-runner for any reason.
E.g.
Recon Mission 12:25 Lingfield 1pt EW Sub: It Just Takes Time 5:50 Newcastle 1pt EW
Can I change my selection once it’s been posted?
You can only change your selection IF it is either deemed void OR does not exist, If subs have been offered they will be used instead. If no sub has been offered and the selection deemed void you can post another selection as long as the first race of the day is not off. If the first race of the day is off you will be forced into using your PASS wildcard.
What criteria do selections need to satisfy?
Selections simply need to be on UK/IRE racing.
Selections will use 20 points per pick. This can be 20pt win or 10pt EW only.
When must selections be posted?
I will get the thread up where I can the night before. Anyone who needs to post a selection sooner than the next days thread being active can message me and I will make sure their entry along with any substitutes is posted on that day’s selections thread.
In the group stage (Jan 4th to 16th) all selections simply have to be made prior to the first race, IE the latest selections can be posted in 1 min before the off on the forum clock.
In the knockout stages after the group stage has concluded, the AWAY team must post their selection prior to 11am and the HOME team prior to the first race of the day, if the home team wishes to post earlier, thats fine too. (Giving the home team the ability to view the away selections pick.)
IN THE GROUP STAGES YOUR SELECTIONS CANNOT BE THE SAME AS ANYONE IN YOUR GROUP AND IN THE KNOCKOUT ROUNDS YOUR SELECTIONS CANNOT BE THE SAME AS YOUR OPPONENTS. If this happens accidentally and is not rectified prior to off time, the player that has duplicated their opponents selection will be forced to use their Pass wildcard, if it has already been used in the round they will automatically receive the FIRST favourite of the LAST MEETING OF THE DAY off. So for example on the 31st Dec if the player did not make a selection they would receive the favourite in the 2:15 at Newcastle.
How are selections staked and returns calculated?
I’ve thought about all methods and decided:
Points will be calculated from profit only. Think of it like a free bet every time you make a selection bookmaker style. So for example if you have a 3/1 winner for 20pt, 60pt will be added to your total, not the stake too. Or if you back a 7/1 10pt each way winner then 70 points from the win and 14 points from the place.
It is impossible to lose points.
Results will be calculated using official industry SP taken from Sportinglife.
How do I progress to the next round?
The top 2 players in each group (highest points total) will progress to the knockout rounds. The player with the higher profit will be allocated as the home team in the next round.
The draw for the group stages is random.
The draw for the last 16 onwards will be random, although group winners will be in a different pot to runners up, to ensure the winners a home tie!
From the knockout stages onwards you only need to beat your opponent to progress to the next round (most points wins)
Of those that progress, the half that recorded the highest tally of points from the previous round will get a home tie next round.
Wildcards:
Each player will have a variety of wildcards per round to use. If they are not used they are lost and cannot be carried across to the next round should you progress. They must be used BEFORE the last day of the round, because the last selection of the round will be automatically doubled for everyone, hopefully adding a little bit more volatility and excitement to the latter stages of the round.
-(NAP) selection (2 x points) -(NB) (1.5 x points) -(2) selections (make 2 selections rather than 1) -Last day (double points for everyones selections) -(Pass) (make no selection this day and receive 20pt added to your score)
WHEN MAKING A SELECTION AND WISHING TO USE A WILDCARD PLEASE INDICATE THE SELECTION AND THE WILDCARD USED e.g.
On the results table you shall receive wildcard abbreviations next to your name until you use them to let everyone know what you have left to use, please correct me if there is an error. E.g. it should look like this if I hadn’t used any wildcards yet:
ItsMeSwaddle (NAP) (NB) (2) (P)
And then I use my next best the next day my status would read:
ItsMeSwaddle (NAP) (2) (P) , missing the (NB) because its used.
Just to be clear, sorry if that is obvious.
Where a selection is NOT made on the day or is invalid?
Where a selection has NOT been made by a player on a certain day the PASS WILDCARD will automatically be used. 20pt will be added to your points tally for the round. If a player has already used the PASS then they will automatically receive the FIRST favourite of the LAST MEETING OF THE DAY off. So for example on the 31st Dec if the player did not make a selection they would receive the favourite in the 2:15 at Newcastle.
If a selection is NOT made 4 times in a round the player will be disqualified from the comp.
If you are unable to post/barely anyone can post because the forum is down?
I don’t think there is an easy solution for this, if you are unable to post you can send me a forum message, but if you are unable to post you are unlikely to be able to send me a message. I guess on this day you will be forced to use a PASS.
We had a situation mid Dec that completely wrecked the lay comp when it was going well. If it is obvious that the majority of posters cannot post (lets say 50% or more of players have NOT posted, bar the final round, the days selections will be made void) 1 day will be added onto the back of the comp and we will use the Sunday planned as a rest day to post selections. Hopefully that will not happen.
PLEASE POST IF ANYTHING REMAINS UNCLEAR OR NEEDS CHANGING - I’D RATHER CLEAR IT UP BEFORE THE START SO ITS NOT A MESS ONCE WE START!
Like the lay comp, the selections thread will go up in the Horse Racing forum and then the results in the Competitions tab.
Go well all!

Everyone will make 13 selections each in the group stages...one per day...and on 4 of any of the days you will attach a wild card to your selection, either NAP, NB, PASS, 2 selections (put up 2 horses 1 one day).
Hopefully becomes very obvious after a couple of days. But hope it does!
The top 2 in the group will qualify for the next stage.
Thought it was a fine line between over complicating things and being too similar to the other comps to be pointless.

I do think it's too complicated tbh. I really would drop the wildcards. Experience has shown me I am better at understanding comp rules than a lot but this is a bit much for me.

I tend to agree with those that feel the rules require a lot of digesting and i also thought it was a basic A v B knockout. The additions (phone a friend and wildcard etc) are also an additional factor for complication, but irrespective of this i will give it a go.
Good luck and a happy new year.

swaddle has come up with a different type of comp,by the looks of it he has put a lot of thought into it,yes it might be a bit complicated but by god most of us have got plenty of time on our hands to get to understand it ,and lets not forget its a bit of fun maybe after the first month he can review it ,maybe he will not need to,and if it is to much work for him at least it will keep him off the bookie bashing threads

Let us go for shorter rounds. Each round should last 7 days instead.
Lets reduce the wildcard system so you have a NAP only to use one of the days. The last day will still be worth double.
A round of group stages then straight knockout to add a bit of difference, that can stay in.
