I have seen that sort of move carried out with success this year, it was a runaway winner of Roger Charlton one Sunday this summer, hasn't run since I think...began with 'T'. So yeah, it can be done...but it is just so very very rare in a race full of hcappers with miles under their belts.

Just maybe i'm barking up the wrong tree. I saw a very odd interview with him/Matt Chapman in the Wolves paddock last year, it has stuck in the mind. Alone & waiting to mount, he looked like he had a million things on his mind and the Marmite personality of Chapman was not for him. Fair enough you might say, but he seemed up to his eyes in 'pis%ed off' before Chapman crept up. I hope he's just a deep and alternative thinker who carries it onto the racetrack sometimes. I hope its just that rather than he's up to his eyeballs in the smelly stuff with the sort of blokes Taggart would investigate too many years ago. I know i'm letting my imagination run wild but I stand by the claim that there should be a dossier.

And yes Rico, i've been around a while and let most things in ordinary 12f hcaps at Wolves just float on by...I must have watched hundreds. And so after a while you get to know what a winning ride will generally look like on a exposed horse in this type of race. But this guy to me is the only one i've spotted of a brave and underpaid bunch who just seems...well...i've already said it.

Watch Prince Liyr's run last time at Goodwood, after about a furlong or so he started taking a ferocious hold, and although he did eventually settle better, it was still surprising he saw his race out well enough to finish second.

As for tonight, you could see he was keen again, but Kelly seemed to have him under control and nicely covered up, but the horse was also threatening to climb on heels and Kelly decided to let him go and he's made a sharp move on the outer to move up and track the eventual third.

At Goodwood the horse showed he can he run his race inefficiently and still find reserves of stamina, but tonight he stopped quickly off the home bend, and I wouldn't put that down to the move Kelly made.

So in conclusion, IMO, I wouldn't blame Kelly for the horse's performance tonight.

Good points, not going to argue with most of it as regards the horse. The only thing I would say is that, as you acknowledge, Kelly just had about had him where you would think he wanted him tonight, one off the rail, keeping a fancied rival three wide early.

So why does a jockey of roughly 20 years experience and countless rides in tightly knit hcaps over 12f at Wolves suddenly decide to let that good early position go?. The horse was keen enough, so were others, typical stuff really. As you say, you couldn't be very encouraged by the horses demeanour but that actual race position..yes I could.

That's where my argument lies, where does a jockey of his proven competence think his best chance is? The in running betting didn't overly react in a negative way but once he made that move it was I think a good walk from an initial shortening after the start.

A poor/strange decision from a jockey with so much experience. As I said earlier perhaps he just thinks differently, he saw a market rival make a move and just thought that was his best chance. Perhaps he just, like you, felt the horse was just doing too much..but i've seen him anchor far worse than that in his time.

I would back down from arguing this is a dossier entry for Kelly, you make fair points and the stewards would readily agree with you not me on this ride.

I don't come on here much (as the record shows) but I will try and look into retrieving this post and adding to it when I see another ride of interest...chances are though i'll let it float on by.

For the record, I did lose money on the race, Kelly's mount was just initially a small loser on my bets, a lay of Kelly's ride in running lessened the losses on the race. I think if i'd made a profit on the race maybe i'd have would have forgotten the gripe and moved on which is a shame because i've seen enough of this guy's riding over the years just to let this bit of steam off, it has been building.

I remember the interview with Chapman as well, he came across very badly I thought, seemed very condescending, Chapman was just doing his job and Kelly was just trying to be a smart arse.
I do think he won a race though making that move a few months ago, although he was the first horse to go not the second one so to speak, it was on the aw.

Just to contradict myself Conygree made a a similar move when it won the gold cup. I remember it well because I laid the arse off it when it did it!!!

Matty, I didn't say it was a "good move". I referred to the Goodwood race because if you watch it you will see how hard the horse pulled in that race after about a furlong or so. So my point is this, Kelly felt the horse becoming keen with him, which you can see on the replay, and decided for safety reasons as he was in close quarters, to let the horse go.

But I would also opine, that the energy expended to the point where he slots in behind Lord Toronaga, was not the reason he stopped so quickly on the home bend.

* because at Goodwood he must have wasted loads of energy through pulling so hard, but he still found plenty to run on for second place.

Race 8 - 8:30pm
THE BET BUILDER AT bet365 HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5)

Approaching 2 furlongs out, a weakening PRINCE LLYR (IRE), which was later pulled up, hung left-handed crowding MAZIKEEN, placed fifth, onto INTERNATIONAL LAW, placed fourth, which was checked in its run, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.

Following the race, Silvestre De Sousa reported that CHAIRMAN POWER, placed eighth, was unsuited by the tight nature of the Wolverhampton track on this occasion and Callum Shepherd reported that RAY'S THE ONE (GB), unplaced, hung left-handed inside the final 4 furlongs. The Veterinary Officer reported that PRINCE LLYR (IRE), which was pulled up, was found to be lame on its left-fore.

I never mentioned the horse (to be fair). Not relevant to the point I was making about Kelly, obviously beaten too far out for him to be relevant in its defeat.

What I was getting at was regarding the early move. Don't buy any safety excuse George is muttering about, they race two by two time after time at Wolves.  The in running betting will generally let you know about anything else that doesn't conform. Three wide gives a licence to try something perhaps but racing in close quarters, often keen...its simply what happens at Wolves. Kelly executes those tactics as well as anyone, when it suits.

Take a bunch of regular Wolves watchers and stop the race where he makes the move. Good move/bad move? Certain the overwhelming majority are shouting no Shane!, don't do it!

Arguably the greatest tipster/AW judge of all time put the horse up yesterday morning (Hugh T). It certainly wasn't what he was expecting judging by his comments. 'Rare to see a horse quicken up so well'....'he'll need luck in running' etc.  Anyway enough, i'll be back in two years for another financial loss induced moan.

I did almost win the aw tipster comp that atr did a few years back, I was top at lingfield and almost won the whole shooting match, on the last day I had a 20/1 shot came off the last bend in front but got picked up in the last 1/2 furlong by a Koukash dodgepot. I'd have won about £4000 I think. As it was I got 2 free members badges for the arena tracks, which I only used once!!

Anyway don't be a stranger to us on here, especially when we're in agreement
