I booked Willie Carson for a friend of mine, in those days you had terrible trouble trying to get a line out of Ireland and had to go through the Telephone Exchange , you could be waiting for hours trying to get a operator to get a line to England, after several attempts I finally got him to answer , it was my third time in 3 days of trying , finally Willie answered and asked the question why me, I told him he was a brilliant jockey and could comfortably do the weight and he know the course well etc, he asked a little about the trainer as he had never heard of him, did he know what he was about etc, I told him he wad a very clever man and knew his stuff , then the final question . Is he good enough , I uttered the  immortal words  , gone by, Willie said job done and hung up...I don't for the life of me remember why I remembered that today...Maybe it was the Great Bear thing that brought it up...

I had to check that one Workrider, tbh it had slipped my mind. Pity we haven't got a Time Machine to go back and bet it, lol.

One of my better day themightymac, seems like I'd need a Time Machine to back a winner now...

Was managing the Ladbrokes in Covent Garden opp the Cross Keys.
Yearly bonus time was a fortnight away and the shop was doing well and I
was due a nice few hundred and had booked Ibiza on the strength.
Royal Ascot- in walks this face and wants 33 monkeys Time Machine- ring up, bet accepted,
- sluices in,bonus decimated, holiday aborted, manager gutted.
Still wasn’t a total disaster, lobbed us a score on collecting!

£500 @ 33/1 ? - and was taken !!!!

How things have changed. They'd be ringing up/ refusing if you wanted £50 on today.

The word 'Bookmaker ' is completely misnamed now.

Actually come to think of it, it was 500e/w and workrider
I get the impression you’re not a posh city gent type, which this
guy was.
Unless you were doing your T.P. McKenna routine from Minder.

harry31 -

You should have chucked 'a score' on it yourself (thinking about your bonus potentially diminishing) ...

It lose - Then the score only comes out of your - still in tact - Bonus.

That way  £660 'Saver' in the Bank ... Holiday NOT cancelled - etc ...

You’re dead right in retrospect, however lumpy bets in that shop
were not uncommon and as the projected juicy bonus would indicate,
the majority had got stuffed.
So you assume a 33/1 shot in a 30 runner handicap at Royal Ascot is
going to go the same way.
Ah well, we live and learn. ( or do we?)!

Friend of mine was the manager of a Hector McDonald  in Wood Green , I did board marker for him the day Empery won the Derby, he often thought of not putting a £10 treble through thankfully I cured him of it, and many a time he would have paid dearly for it..
