Disgraceful how the BBC news tonight ended their report with reference to the fall and saying how 'dangerous' the sport can be. IT was a report on the return of live sport and should not have had an ill-informed opinion tagged on the end. I hate the BBC with a passion.

Needless to say these left wing do-gooders calling for a ban on horse racing have zero knowledge or insight into the industry. I am all for animal welfare and promoting safety within the sport but it is time we stopped pandering to these pathetic cretins. The tree hugging, hippy liberals who want racing banned spout so much bile we shouldn't even give them air time. They sugar-coat their arguament and say it's about stopping cruelty to animals. Let me tell you now, it has absolutely nothing to do with this at all. They have a very different agenda they are trying to persue... they need to be called out for what they are.

It would seem some people on social media want to live in a risk averse society, where everybody stays in their homes (except for a bit virtue signalling at 8 o'clock every Thursday evening - of course with someone on hand to film you, 'did you get that cameraman/'), and nobody dies. Crazy

The BBC big up the sports that they televise (a decreasing list every year) or broadcast on 5live. Racing gets a bit of positive spin for Aintree, Ascot and Cheltenham on the days they broadcast live commentary but criticism the rest of the time. A sport that I would ban but the BBC have the rights for is Boxing which the Beeb now think is wonderful. This myth that the BBC is free of adverts is rubbish. They advertise themselves at every opportunity.

Report GEORGE.B June 2, 2020 12:59 PM BST
The 'news story' was a sport (whichever one it happened to be) returning after a largely healthy population had been placed effectively under house arrest.

Now you ask about agendas.

If you accept that horse racing is a risky sport both to horses and jockeys and all always will be due to its nature, then the death of a horse is *not* news.

If you have an agenda to discredit or destroy the sport, the death of a horse becomes 'news' at every opportunity.

Thankyou for you answer flushgordon.

Although I initially was very surprised that someone holding an anti BBC opinion should pick a TV station from such a strongly socialist country, and
with such a mega amount of recent non European immigration ( Pop 5.3m, with 900,000 immigrants ) as I was under the impression that most of those who didn't like
the BBC  was because they claim it is to left wing. But you have chosen a TV station from a very left wing country.

I was uninformed as to their program content so did a quick google to find their most popular programs, which I didn't find, but I found a list of all
their programs in alphabetical order. Below is the list of all the programs they show for the letter "A".

The vast majority of it seems to be reality TV, from USA.  If that's your thing then sure I hope you enjoy Norge TV as much as you want.

But is it better than the BBC?
hmmmmm it doesn't seem to cater to many people with an IQ of over 100, and interestingly, Norway has the highest average IQ in the world at 104

anyway, this content is in your opinion, makes it a better TV station than the BBC

If you like it, then good for you. But don't keep making me pay for your pleasure.

Screaming, how very nice of yuo to join in the conversation. It must be a decade or more since we last met at one of the Magicians Xmas events.

Your point on the BBC's revenue is a conundrum indeed, and ever increasing one that becomes more pertinent as the modern world changes the way media is consumed.

I have no answers as to how it's funding should change, so I shall not join in the discussion on that.

All I am asking is that the people who are quite happy to express a strong opinion on the BBC being "a Disgrace", "having an agenda", "rotten to the core" etc etc.

Would they please express their opinion on what TV station is better than the BBC?

It would truly help their argument if they could name any examples of what they perceive to be good and proper TV station for the British people.

All the very best

I have no idea who you are, and I've never attended a Xmas event with any Magicians in my life.

Let's compromise. I'll carry on paying for you to watch the BBC, if you pay my sub to Racing TV. Fair's fair. You asked for the names of TV channels which are better then the BBC's, and I've given you one: Racing TV. The evidence? I watch Racing TV, but not a thing on any of the BBC's channels. Therefore it must be better.

Report sageform June 2, 2020 4:22 PM BST
Escapee, better at what? I have the choice of BBC, the freeview channels and anything on Sky including Sky sport, Eurosport and BT sport and also RUK. The only things I sometimes watch on BBC are the local news at 6.30 plus Countryfile and Antiques Roadshow on a Sunday evening. For that I am paying £450 as in addition to my house with 2 occupants, I have 2 holiday cottages next door for each of which I have to pay a full license for an average of 20 weeks occupancy but zero occupancy at the moment. I tried to cancel one license on their website but was told nobody was working at the moment so I am still paying for nothing. Total cr**ks. As Screaming says, you are required by law to pay for something you may never use. I would estimate my use at Sky news and sports including racing 55%, Bloomberg news 10% BT sport in normal times 10%, RUK 10%, ITV, Channel 4 and 5 5% and the three BBC channels 10%. So even paying £90 a month for Sky is better value for me than BBC.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves June 2, 2020 4:28 PM BST
The last thing I watched on any of the BBC channels was the second Thor film two or three Christmases ago. It really would have been better value to have bought the DVD, I reckon.

And being deaf means I'm forced by law to pay for hearing people getting free use of all those radio stations too.
Report Escapee June 2, 2020 4:31 PM BST
My Mistake Screaming, I have obviously misremembered our meeting.

Another mistake I seem to have made is seeking objective discussion based on facts or general consensus, rather than subjective discussion that merely express
personal preferences.

Asking what is someones favourite TV station is a different question to what is a better TV station than the BBC.

(obviously there are different criteria one can apply to derive "better" but I thought it best to make the question as short as possible)

I think the BBC (and most of the media tbh) pander to the stay at home do nothing types. They love to run anyone or anything down that is making an effort to achieve something for themselves. They particularly love those on the furlough that are relishing the 'stay at home' virtue signalling nonsense while they get their money for doing nothing (not everyone on furlough is like that of course). In reality they will achieve nothing other than inflicting a few irritations. It's a great week for racing and a dark day for the lazy ****s.
Report The Knight June 2, 2020 10:09 PM BST
I don't get the defence of the BBC by some with the line 'name me a better TV station'. That is irrelevant.

They are all bad and just become some are worse than the BBC doesn't make the BBC any better, or easier to stomach.

Given the number of horses that race against the number that fall, horse racing is only marginally dangerous. Yes, the results of a fall can be terrible but, and Sparrow take note, consider the following.

When motor racing returns the BBC may well carry a report. Let's suppose (but hope it doesn't happen) there is an accident in practice or in the race itself. Will the BBC tag on a final line saying 'let's not forget motor racing is dangerous because such and such...' I bl**dy doubt it. There was no need for that final line on the Newcastle report on Monday. It wasn't relevant to the story of live sport returning. It was gleefuly put in by a horse racing producer or journalist, no doubt young, who thinks they are on a higher intellectual level than the rest of us.
Report sageform June 3, 2020 8:16 AM BST
"Better" is a meaningless word when judging TV channels. We all have our own preferences. I have never watched a soap in my 55 years as an adult consumer which makes me atypical but I do watch news programmes and anything to do with wildlife (the one area where the BBC has done a very good job) The point that Escapee does not seem to grasp is that in every other area, consumers have a choice to pay for a product or do without it. The license fee is unique in that if you want to watch ANY TV programmes, you have to pay the BBC £154.50 whether you watch any of their output or not. How would you feel if you had to pay Jaguar £154 a year (they have a very good product) before you begin to choose what make of car you wish to drive.
Report Trident June 3, 2020 8:38 AM BST
Will the ITV new contract to show Racing go ahead? Changing public perception is almost impossible imo. You cant stop horses clipping heels. Luckily for us it doesnt happen very often.
Report Trident June 3, 2020 8:40 AM BST
Honestly though. I see in the future horses racing in their own lanes.
